Hey guys, I just turned 17 and I'm heading to college next year (started school early) and I was wondering if it would be the right time to start bulking up. At this age, I know I should start but right now, my height is killing me. Because of my unfortunate genes, I'm at a short 5 4 weighing in at about 120. Hate it. Supposedly, there is that one myth that lifting stops your growth and thats not what I want. So is the time right to start serious lifting (not occasional gym visits) or is there anything I can do to grow? I really want to get something done over the summer.

That's a fairly widespread myth. There is no evidence to support that weightlifting stumps growth. Hell, I've been lifting since I was about 12 or 13 years old and I'm 6'2". Lift away.

No it's all a crock of ****, lift to your hearts content and eat like you mean it, hell at your age right now you have so many growth hormones surging, take advantage of it!!! Who knows in the next year or two you might shoot up a few inches here or there anyways....

Yeah sucks being short (I'm almost 6 ft:p ) Anyways, look at pros of being on the shorter side. When you put on 10-20 lbs of muscle it will show up a lot faster/better than say some one who is a lot taller.

Weightlifting doesn't stunt growth, in fact there's a little evidence to suggest that it may increase your growth. It certainly appears to be the case in my experience where I had a growth spurt in the early stages of my weight training.

So if you want to run the risk of growing some more, do some hardcore weightlifting.

Its always the right time to start bulking up.

There is some evidence that very heavy weight training can cause premature fusion of your epiphyseal plates, where growth occurs. So this is not a myth. However, at 17, I dont think you are at a huge risk for this unless you are handling massive poundages, which you arent. Lift away.

Well I'm here to tell you there is such a magic wand. Something that will make you almost completely irresistible to any woman you "point it" at. Something guaranteed to fill your life with love, romance, and excitement.

Yeah it's possible to casue stunted growth due to what colossus has said as well as injuries BUT those are extremelly rare instances.

The only time a teen can fuse their bones together would be working out with 1.5/2x your bodyweight (IE: you weight 120.....you would have to squat 240 to be in any sort of danger)

I say learn how to squat and deadlift CORRECTLY and by next school year you should have some serious muscle lbs on your frame.

I was always under the impression that a statement like this is true.

"From studies I have read on growth plate damage the force needed to damage the plate to the point of causing early fusion is quite high. An example of that level of force might be a car accident. Weight training in a controlled environment where form is the focus will not have a detrimental effect on bone health. In fact progressive weight training will cause more calcium to be deposited in the bones which will gaurd against osteopenia in later life and thicker stronger bones will be formed."

There's some evidence that crashing an airplane into the ground is bad for your health too, but you're kinda dumb for worrying about it.

If you are scared about early fusion of the growth plates caused by high pressure on the bones, then you'd better stop running, because you exert much larger forces on your bones (I think 8x your bodyweight). A 1.5xbw squat is meagre when compared to that.

Yes you can start lifting. It will not stop you from growing. You need to be careful though because at your age your body is not done developing. Make sure you bulk up slowly. Also you may still may have some growing left in you. Also congrats on starting college early.

Olympic athletes begin training when they are 5-8 years old, and begin lifting heavy when they are 10-12 years old.
