Havent used POF in over a year, keep the messages simple and about something in her profile. Even then the response rate and getting a date is like 1 in 20. Its a lot of energy and time to find a date but its worth it just to experience 'online dating'. There is something novel about it but wouldnt recommend long term or as your ONLY source of girls.

POF is great for romance but pretty lame for hookups in my experience. I've used over 60 different dating / hookup communities. I'm not fond of how much they make you fill out when you join, either. Also, the minute you write something even remotely suggestion on your profile, you get deleted.

Although I prefer to meet people in person now from the streets or friends in the past I have taken out a girl from pof and another from okc to see what it was like. Honestly average looking but not much wrong with them. They certainly werent clingy psycho b!tchs as some people believe. Its just another pool of girls made available to you on top of everything else.

On another note, if you are seriously considering online dating, try match.com. I've had lots of success there and the women are that site are much more attractive.

In my experience, POF has a lot of women. A lot of them are flakes, fakes or prudes. Then there are the desperate ones which is my favorite. They'll literally beg to suck your d**k. There are a few 9's and 10's but those ones are typically attention seekers who get bombarded with a hundred messages a day. The rest are normal women with normal profiles who don't hang around for long because they soon find out that POF is filled with a lot of creepy men and losers asking for sex in the first message or "hi" as a first message.
