The past couple days when I go to get up I get a sharp dull pain in my tailbone area to the point I feel like I can fall on the floor. It's like my back catches or something then I am OK once I get past that point. Does this sound like something serious to anyone who might know or maybe a back strain from Squats and Deadlifts?

Just a note I had this before I started back into lifting and it seems to come on when I am gaining weight or when my weight gets toward 220 reckon I should do more ab exercises?

Any ideas?

I've had this problem too, I think I've been lifting too heavy and/or with poor form. Need to get that fixed. But anyway.

I would suggest a few things. And I'm no Dr. / Physical Therapist so take this with a grain of salt.

Try some stretches for your back. Keep your head and neck in line with your spine, sit down with your legs in front of you, and reach for your toes.

Lie on your stomach with your arms folded in front of you, lift up your legs using your hamstrings and lower back. Variation: put your arms straight underneath your torso and use them as a lever, lifting your legs up further.

Try plow pose, it really stretches your back. It might hurt for a while after, but that is only because the muscles stretched here are generally neglected.

Also try bridge pose. http://www.yogajournal.com/poses/472_1.cfm

Yoga is awesome, don't discount it til you try it.

I am the king of back problems. I have had everything, when i was addicted to a computer game/playing sports was a bad combo. Is this pain more directed to one side or the other? Did you know that lack of flexibility in your hamstrings, and hip flexors have negative effects on your back. And yes strengthening your core muscles, will help reduce this problem in the future. You should stretch alot more in the future, and try to avoid strenuous positions for your back ( sitting for a long period of time, crappy posture..). Sleep on your side with a pillow between your knees, to take pressure off your back. Also Ice of and on for the first 24 hours, than switch to heat, to loosen the muscle up. You can also take Advil to dull the pain.

i've struggled with the same thing since college (like you, it seems to be related to going over a weight threshold).

the pillow between the legs is a good short term solution -- make sure it's a fairly thin one or you'll just screw up the curvature of your back the other way. when you wake up feeling that way, just find a sturdy chair to relax in for a few minutes and the pain should ease up as things re-align themselves.

it could also be a sign that your mattress is crappy and/or worn out. long term goals would be to strengthen your core and stretch more. for me that means weighted decline situps (hits the abs & hip flexors in one movement) & yoga-derived stretching.

I have a lower back problem. I have to crack my back every once in a while (about 30 times a day) . Its cracked in the lower back region, slightly above where it connects to the hip. Its crack on my right side. I put my hand slightly above my right hip and compress, then lean over to my right and there are some popping noises.

Any advice?

Thanks everyone for the post's very insightful and helpful.

I can now look into these ideas posted to weed out a few things I might need to do and it comes from people who have experienced back pain like mine and the remedies you've used.

Thanks again.
