Is running every morning (when you wakeup) with a puppy (lots of energy) considered good cardio?

I recently got a puppy, and he loves running around for aslong as I'll let him... He'll run, then jog, then run... So I figure it's fairly similar to HIIT (or something along those lines).

Is this good cardio?

Yeha, they say it's better to run 1st thing on an empty stomach. Burns something like 3 X the calories...

If you run as soon as you get up, remember to do a good warm-up/stretching becuase your body has been realitevily inactive for the past 6-10 hours (sleep).

Why does running in the morning use more calories?

Thats exactly why you SHOULDN'T stretch at such a time. Just run slowly at first then run a little faster. Stretch at the end of the run.

It burns more calories since you have had no food for an extended period of time.

Your body will not "burn muscle" because you did not eat anything...

But if you don't have enough calories and/or fat to burn, your muscles will be the fuel for themselves, and catabolism (spelling?) will occur. That's bad.

You don't burn more calories. Running x distance at y speed is always gonna cost your body the same amount of energy. The only difference is that without food in your stomach your body uses alternative sources as fuel. This means breaking down fat reserves and potentially some muscle tissue.
