Im trying to move to denver and im looking for roomates. No one i know is down to go or theyre just full of ****. Ive been lookin on the internet for roomates but i kinda have my doubts. I can get along with most people pretty well but i dunno. Id be down to pay half as much so i could actually enjoy being 20, but i dont wanna get screwed over. It also seems kinda weird to tell people that i met my roomate off the internet...i dunno. What do yall think?

In college I transferred schools, and found roommates by knocking on doors at nearby apartments and asking if anyone needed a roommate. The place I ended up with was with 3 other guys I'd never met, but they seemed cool. The place was animal house, no joke. There's so many different ways to find roommates. Don't feel strange about using whatever tools are available to you.

The only way to make it work is by only rooming with responsible, chill people. Honestly, you never know what type of person you're gonna get, no matter how much you try to screen people. I'm so glad the roommates era of my life is over. I've had some decent roommates, as in we rarely fought, but if you're not in school, I'd advise you to seriously consider finding a way to go without roommates. There's so many more advantages to having your own cave. Consider the extra cost an investment in yourself.

Comparative Advantages:
1) you never have to worry about others not paying for rent/utils/community items
2) the whole place is for you and your stuff, vs. sharing 80% of it with other(s). you can space out. items won't get lost/trashed.
3) you can have it loud or quiet whenever you want
4) it's a much more conducive environment to getting laid
5) you'll never have to put up with someone else's mess, friends, out-of-town visitors, personal problems, etc
6) you will take much more pride in your place when it's your own
7) Food management is a hell of a lot easier! it's amazing when there's a group of guys sharing the kitchen how much nasty stuff accumulates in the fridge, plus if you buy any good food your roomies will "borrow" some of it guaranteed
8) "hey man my computer's busted mind if I use yours for awhile?" [for the next 2 months] There's many variations on this theme. "My car's busted." "Can I borrow $20?" "My alarm clock's dead, think you could wake me up?" Etc.
9) you're far more likely to get your deposit back in a timely fashion
10) If you're into self-improvement at all, this is probably the best reason to have your own place. Even good roommates have a tendency to distract you from learning and achieving your goals.

The downside however, is that to pay the same amount, you generally have to get a much smaller place when you're on your own.

When I moved to Vegas, I was looking at one bed apts, and $700/mo was the cheapest I could find, and that was in a pretty crappy area that I wouldn't want to park my cars in at night. Instead, I met with lots of people from www.roommates.com and ended up living with four other people in a 3500sq/ft $750k, five bedroom home with garage parking, private pool/spa, home gym, game room with pool table, ping pong, arcade games, air hockey, and, with a hot little Asian chick who liked "get to know you sex". All that for a little over $600/mo, and in one of the best gated communities you can find in Vegas.

Now, unless I'm given a place to live if I transfer, I plan on getting roommates any place I go, at least for a few months until I find something better. If you screen fairly well, you can have build in friends (helpful when you're moving to a new town), and it'll give you time to scope out the good areas in town and figure out the bad ones.
