I hope the person you know is ok. It's really horrible this happened. The worst part is that there was prior knowledge this could happen and there wasn't an adequate warning system in place. Tens of thousands of lives could have been saved if only there were the proper warning system in place. :(

LOS ANGELES, (AFP) - An earthquake that unleashed deadly tidal waves on Asia was so powerful it made the Earth wobble on its axis and permanently altered the regional map, US geophysicists said.

The 9.0-magnitude temblor that struck 250 kilometers (155 miles) southeast of Sumatra island Sunday may have moved small islands as much as 20 meters (66 feet), according to one expert.

"That earthquake has changed the map," US Geological Survey expert Ken Hudnut told AFP.
Man that is fvcked up as well not only 60,000+ people are dead but things on this planet change!

Yeah it's pretty f*cked. I have a Sri Lankan friend with a huge extended family. Just got off the phone with him...he sounded damn strange.

Also, a professional footballer from the team I support got swept away. He was on his honeymoon and threw his wife to safety before the wave hit.

I just registered to volunteer for World Vision. Anyone with me?

The British Red Cross has launched an emergency appeal in response to the widespread flooding caused by a massive earthquake off the coast of Sumatra.

The undersea earthquake, which occurred early on Boxing Day, was the most powerful in 40 years. Tidal waves swept across south east Asia, killing thousands and affecting hundreds of thousands more.

The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement is at the forefront of the response to this disaster.

Paul Anticoni, British Red Cross head of international aid: "The priority for the Red Cross is to get relief supplies into the region as quickly as possible and, if necessary, to send in teams of disaster response experts who can support the volunteers and staff already working in the affected countries."

What is the Red Cross doing?

Across south east Asia, Red Cross volunteers trained in disaster response are evacuating people and giving first aid to the injured.
A British Red Cross logistics team is flying to the region tonight.
The British Red Cross has launched an appeal to help fund emergency supplies such as tarpaulins, blankets, cooking utensils and water purification tablets.
The 'Asia earthquake and flood appeal' will also support rehabilitation work in the weeks and months to come.
Help us reach those who have lost everything. Please, give whatever you can today.

A terrible tragedy but the numbers mean nothing. Think of how many people on earth die daily all over the earth, probably over a milllion a day all over. So don't let the media stampede you into thinking these numbers are so high. It is a bad thing, of course, but I hate it when statistics are misused by the media to increase viewership.

If you currently have too many women chasing you, calling you, harassing you, knocking on your door at 2 o'clock in the morning... then I have the simple solution for you.

Just read my free ebook 22 Rules for Massive Success With Women and do the opposite of what I recommend.

This will quickly drive all women away from you.

And you will be able to relax and to live your life in peace and quiet.

Nature's fury. Nothing we do can stop it - even if we had a warning system, another quake/firestorm/hurricane could hit in the middle of a city, kill 500K before we even realise whats going on.

Just on of the dangers of living on this planet.

if you divide the number of people on earth, by the average world life expectincy, lets just say its 50 years on average, and then by the number of days in the year, you get over 300,000 a day dieing so the number dieing from the tsunami is nothing, the whole point is that those people died prematurely and also in a localised area, indonesia is a small country and they lost over 40,000 people, well over 40,000 infact the death toll had reached over 120,000 now, im going to donate £10, its not much but its somthing.

Exactly where I want to be.
You know, I really do hope everyone's friends and family who might have been over there are alright (let me emphasize that first), but I'm looking at this thing a little differently than most of you.

I don't want to sound like "One death is a tragedy, a million is a statistic," but let's do be honest, shall we? The world is a fairly popular place to live, and sometimes she needs a little house cleaning now and then. I look at a bit of population reduction in an extremely populated area as something that simply needed to happen sooner or later. In a way, the world needs something like this to happen (or a world-scale war) to prevent the seeminly/ultimately inevitable problem of over-population. Kinda like when the government issues special licenses to people to hunt a species of animal that gets too abundant. This Tsunami may have been nature's way of sitting in a tree stand with a high-power rifle and lettin' loose.

Disagree if you wish, but this tragedy isn't so tragic.

[/devil's advocate]
