KING OF PRUSSIA, Pa. - Kathy Curtis waded through a sea of colorful camisoles, gypsy skirts and lacy tees at Lane Bryant, shopping for a deal.

The 45-year-old suburban Philadelphia resident can afford to be picky. As a size 20, she didn't use to have as many choices in plus sizes. But more retailers are finally paying attention to customers like her — if she doesn't like Lane Bryant, she can shop elsewhere.

"They could do more, but things are much more stylish than they were 10 years ago. Five years even," Curtis said. Before, "they figured, give them a couple of extra large tops and they're happy."

As waistlines expand across America, fashionable plus-size clothes are proliferating and moving into the mainstream. In some cases, plus sizes are leaving the outer fringes of the store floor to hang next to "regular-sized" clothes as the average American gets bigger. Where they remain separated, plus sizes are being displayed in specialized boutiques like petites.

Wal-Mart Stores Inc., the world's largest retailer, is adding more racks of plus-size apparel in its "George," "Metro 7" and other lines due to increased demand, said spokeswoman Linda Blakley. And the larger sizes hang right next to the smaller sizes.

"You can shop all the lines in one section," Blakley said.

Old Navy, a unit of Gap Inc., carries plus sizes in 250 stores nationwide, up from 55 stores nearly two years ago, said spokesman Greg Rossiter. Old Navy started offering them online in 2000.

"We recognize that the market is underserved," he said. "The response has been very good."

Kmart, a unit of Sears Holding Corp., hired a special designer for plus sizes a year ago. Around the same time, it also introduced "attention," a missy and plus-size clothing line that only uses stretch fabric. Kmart said it's always displayed plus sizes in the same section as other sizes.

"It is doing really well," said June Beckstead, vice president of design at Sears Holding Corp.

The Kohl's department store chain added plus sizes for its "Apt. 9" and "Daisy Fuentes" collections last spring.

Retailers who have long catered to plus sizes are getting into their second act.

This year, Liz Claiborne Inc. in New York is opening five "Elisabeth" plus-size boutiques. The designer, which began offering plus sizes in 1990, already has 28 such stores nationwide.

"Plus-size women are very, very loyal to brands. They have a lot of spending power," said Barry Zelman, general manager of specialty retail at Liz Claiborne.

Charming Shoppes Inc. of Bensalem, Pa. announced last month that it was rolling out a chain of plus-size lingerie stores nationwide called Cacique. The stores will carry sizes 12 to 28 and feature larger dressing rooms with tri-fold mirrors for viewing at different angles.

The parent of Lane Bryant, Catherines and Fashion Bug already had seven Cacique stores as of mid-March and plans to open 50 stores by year's end.

Retailers are expanding into larger sizes because demand has grown: Two-thirds of American adults are either overweight or obese today compared with 46 percent a quarter century ago, according to the American Obesity Association in Washington, D.C.

Among children ages 6 to 11, about 30 percent are overweight or obese, up fourfold from 25 years ago. Nearly a third of those ages 12 to 19 are heavy, with the percentage more than doubling during the same period, the nonprofit advocacy group said.

That's why "virtually everybody" is looking to cater to the plus-size market, said Kurt Barnard, president of Barnard's Retail Consulting Group in Nutley, N.J. "That's where the dollars are."

But it took decades for many retailers to see the light.

"The stores did not want the plus-size woman to mix with the svelte and slender," Barnard said. "Bad for the image, they felt."

Maxine Monroe, the 37-year-old publisher of an upcoming booklet called "Curvaceous Fashion Guide for the Plus Size Woman," said retailers have taken this market for granted for a long time. At least in the past, larger-size sections tended to be tucked away in less-visited parts of stores.

"It's horrible, just horrible," said the size-24 Philadelphia resident. It's as if retailers were telling her, "'I'll sell it to you, but I don't want to see you at my store,'" she said.

Size snobbism, however, is shrinking as retailers realize that outfitting the Rubenesque shopper is a growth niche in the mature women's apparel market, said Marshal Cohen, chief industry analyst at The NPD Group, a consumer research firm in Port Washington, N.Y.

From March 2005 to February 2006, sales of plus-size women's apparel rose by nearly 7 percent to $19 billion, according to the research company. That compares with a 3.4 percent increase in sales of women's clothing as a whole to over $101 billion.

Plus sizes are more profitable for retailers. On average, plus-size customers pay 8 percent to 10 percent more for clothes because they go on sale less often, Cohen said.

But as plus sizes become more mainstream, prices should drop, Barnard said.

That would be welcome news to 42-year-old Vanessa White, a New Castle, Del. resident who drove to Philadelphia recently with her family to shop for plus sizes at an Old Navy.

She said she pays more for her clothes, but thinks retailers should change their tune

"The average is not average anymore," White said. "The average is plus size."
That Fat Ms White is right. People are starting to notice that being average is being fat and are accepting that this is normal. I actually noticed that looking at online profiles that chicks who describe themselves as average actually have fat hanging around their belly and fat arms. Fat is becoming more and more acceptable every day before you know it there won't be a whole lot of chicks out there to date with a normal body weight to size ratio. Is this the future?:nervous: I ain't no chubby chaser and I ain't going to become one!!:box:

I think I'm going to be sick. Why do fat girls have to wear stretched clothing, belly-shirts and lingerie?

Even the term small has been enlarged. It's hard for me to find clothes that fit comfortably anymore because very few shirts are taylored to people with small frames that aren't a little chunky. And extra small has been replaced with extra large.

C'mon guys, let's look at the bright side here...

The good news about fat being accepted as average is this - fat chicks who think chubby is normal will dress in styles that don't attempt to hide the body fat, since body fat is "normal" - making them much easier to identify and avoid.

A friend of mine shared with me a great term to desribe this phenomenon - THE MUFFIN TOP. As in, the roll of fat that smushes out around the waistline, just like the top of a muffin fresh out of the oven. Some chicks will wear a tight and tucked in top to condense the muffin top while bolder ones will bare it for all to see. The best muffin tops are the ones where they also have a navel piercing, as if that will make us guys not notice the adipose around it.

Just because a woman listens to you and acts interested in what you say doesn't mean she really is. She might just be acting polite, while silently wishing that the date would hurry up and end, or that you would go away... and never come back.

it aint just an american problem. European obesity is rising at alarming rates as well. If you thought there are a lot of fat people now just wait till all the fat kids walking around grow up in 10 years time. Wait till they get out of high school.

I know obviously I'm in the minority and will be made fun of by some of the shallow, dicless, retards who tend to hang around here- but I have nothing against chubby chics if they have carves and a pretty face.

Now, huge blobs who have no shape and are ugly- no thanks.

That said though, this is still disturbing. Its good not to ridicule people, but still you should not try to glamorize being fat either. Its a HEALTH problem and that takes precidence(sp?) over any other factors in this matter. I've been obese for the last few years but I've been shedding the weight the past year and a half or so.

P.S. I don't like chubby chics because I'm a fatty now.. infact I'll still probably **** them when I get into good shape.. Believe it or not all males prefer the exact same thing. Maxim and FHM can take a flying ****ing leap as far I'm concerned. Real men like what they want and are unapologetic about it.

Don't let Mtv tell YOUR **** how to think, lol.

Hmm in the words of someone very awesome "there is a reason why tanktops don't come in XXL".

Seriously, if you are fat you have a problem, don't try and make your fat self look sexy... It is not attractive and you need to diet.

That being said I could stand to loose 20 lbs. I lost 40 last summer and hope to loose the rest this summer. I am taking control over my life and not falling into the typical "fat-american" sterotype.

You're an idiot 15 year old and you don't know **** from shinola. Yeah I'm only 18 but I fully acknowledge the immense ignorance of most young people.

I'm a recovering fat guy myself, but come on. I happen to like some chubby chicks regardless(of what I look like).. it depends on how they dress, attitude, and if they have a pretty face. It just depends on how fat and also where its at. If they have it in the right places...

But all of you mother****ers who think ANY fat visible on the body renders a woman un-sexy you have issues- I think you'd be happier ****ing 12 year old boys. Now go jack off to Maxim.

Being even "chubby" is a health problem. When you're chubby it speaks of a bad diet probably full of trans-fats and other hydrogenated crap. I used to be a fatass, but then I realized I didn't want to accept myself that way. I'd been ignoring it and pretending all that flab wasn't there or wasn't important. Then I woke up.

Apathy is the problem. Nobody cares enough to do the hard work to lose it-- they all want a miracle pill or a super-diet.

"chubby" people now will become fatasses later, especially once they're married. Once you're off the market, the main motivation for a lot of people is gone. They'll eat whatever they want and bloat up like a balloon.

I'll only date a chick who clearly cares about her body and isn't some apathetic fatso.

Apathy is the trap I found myself falling into as well. During my marriage I was " comfortable " and ate anything and everything because I was in the comfort zone. I had to get divorced and hit the market to realize how much my outer game was faltering. My inner game is top notch. Working on the outside of the house now.

Well this is definatelly in USA!! I mean everywhere you go, you see MCdonalds. and people get addicted to em, they totaly loose control over themselves, way to many people are like that, and its really hard to accept the fact, but its true. Well there will always be women that respect themselves, and hopefully they will be there for us when we will need some skinny girl to bang.

All I was saying is there are chubby/thick(but not obese) women I like and find attractive. I do realize its unhealthy though, and myself I'd prefer to be in shape(getting there).

Instead of pointing out specific points in my post and having an intellegent argument you bring up my age and call me an idiot? The number of days I've been living on this earth? Do you think it has much more then a rough influence on my maturity? You are made by your experiences, and I've had my fair share. Also, cursing does not make you sound smarter, it just raises the number of asterisks I have to skim over in your post.

That being said I never said that I didn't like fat at all, maybe I should have better defined a "fat chick". When I say that I mean someone that is more then 15-20 pounds higher then they should be. People that have rolls that would fit in your entire hand. Some very fine women I know have an inch of so of fat on them, it is ok looking and pretty healthy. A little fat is a fine healthy thing. A lot of fat is a result of eating at McDonalds a little too much and should be rectified. If you don't have the will power to diet and work out then you don't complain about being fat.

I am a recovering fat guy if you didn't read, I decided I was tired of being a fatass and never felt better. I am still a little overweight but it'll be gone by the end of summer. If you want to call me an idiot again or tell me to go **** 12 year old boys (I'm not sure if that was directed at me, if it wasn't then ignore that part :) ) then feel free to but your rant will not be graced with my reply. However if you would like to debate with me feel free to.

it doesnt bother me that they are making more stylish clothes for larger people.

i want them to make more stylish clothes for tiny short mature women so we dont have to dress like 14 year olds anymore or 40 year olds. seems like when you are 5 ft 100 lbs you have those choices 14 or 40 and nothing in between.
makes you feel weird when you are 28.
