My 15 year old Cat recently passed away.

Before he did, his kidneys were failing an he would sometimes urinate before making it to the litter box.

There is a spot on the carpet in the spare room that has cat urine odor, and I can't get it out.

Recommendations?

Honestly bro, cat urine is nearly impossible to get rid of without doing some major remodeling. The urine, is absorbed by not only the carpet, but the padding, and the sub flooring.

You need a strong base to cancel out the Uric acid. I have not checked, but I bet that's what urine cleaning solutions are - strong bases to counteract the acid.

Urine cleaning solutions are expensive and work well olny after several treatments. At PETCO or Petsmart they run about $8-12 for a little spray bottle.

The best thing to use is 100% white vinegar. Saturate the area (make sure it soaks through the carpet pad) with a spray bottle and then just let it dry. your house will reek while it dries but it will eliminate it entirely.

Also if you need to find pee spot then grab a blacklight.

The smell comes back if you use white vinegar on its own. You def need a black light to find the stain/s. Also dont use any amonia based product - cat urine smells of amonia which is what attracts puss to pee there again & again, so if you use amonia to clean it, puss thinks its his/her own pee & goes back there.

I found a great recipe here, http://www.caturineoff.com (it's NOT an affiliate link) - it works brilliantly and my cats never peed there again. I found some of the other recipes that you find don't get rid of the smell permanently - the smell keeps coming back.
