There seems to be a lot of paranoia about red meat. How much of that is founded? It's almost like it's ingrained in people that red meat = unhealthy. Is this just another panic trend or is there more to it?

I'm willing to bet that our high cancer rates have more to do with other factors such as too much junk food, too little excercise and generally unhealthy lifestyles. I don't know if red meat has as much influence on colon cancer as some say, but I don't know, I'm not an expert.

The increased colon cancer risk with high red meat intake thing...is most likely due to people overcooking or cooking their meat at high temperatures. A lot of people are paranoid about eating rare beef. Both cooking methods lead to the production of heterocyclic amines, which are carcinogenic, and the most likely source of this increased cancer risk.

Solutions are:

1. don't eat too much meat cooked at high temperatures (fried/grilled) and if you do, consume something high in antioxidants afterwards e.g. green tea, vegetables

2. marinate your meat (proven to reduce hetercyclic amine formation)

Though epidemiological studies like the colon cancer one aren't amazingly reliable. Two recent studies: one showed that eating grapefruit increases risk of cancer, another showed that eating vegetables doesn't reduce breast cancer incidence. What are we supposed to think?

These studies never have any lifestyle correlations with them.

For instance, your average cheeseburger loving fatass who never eats fruits or vegetables and takes in perhaps 5 grams of fiber a day - he's far more likely to develop colon cancer than the fitness-conscious individual who eats heavy amounts of red meat as part of a carefully planned diet to promote anabolism.

All these studies focus on a single food or behavior without considering how it correlates with a whole set of foods and behavioral choices. Why? Because it makes for an easily digestible formula for the masses to buy and live by.

Lean cuts of red meat are perfectly fine. I wouldn't say that I personally would eat it every day, but it's really helpful in a bodybuilding diet.

I started eating 80/20 ground beef 3 times a day and my fat loss got faster.. shrug.

I'm sure not scared of fat anymore.

It's cyclic.

For a while, eggs are bad for you.

Next, pork is bad for you.

Then, chicken, beef, then back to eggs.

I personally think it's the marketing boards taking their turns running schmear campaigns. If you watch articles, there is usually a "push" or a "sell"

"Beef is bad. A good alternative is pork."

"Pigs eat, and root, in sh¡t. Eggs are clean."

"Eggs are full of cholesterol. Try stir-frying chicken for breakfast."

"Chicken has salmonella. You can easily avoid the mess: Beef and Veal are wonderful."

See?

Lobbyists funding "studies", marketing feeding press-releases, blah, blah, blah.

Tune out the food hype you hear in the media.

I eat a half-pound of bacon with my eggs in the morning and am in better shape now than ever before in my life - in fact I'm still cutting!
