being married is used as a foundation for many legal decisions. For example, according to the U.S. Government Accountability Office, there are 1,138 statutory provisions in federal law in which marital status is a factor in determining benefits, rights, and privileges.
If you are rushed to the emergency room or hospitalized suddenly, your spouse can go with you, consult with your doctor, and get regular updates about your condition. If you are unconscious, your spouse can make decisions about your medical care.

What else?

Simple. Medical power of attorney. Aside from SS death benefits, there's nothing a legal state sanctioned marriage can do that some legal documents can't.

Dear Rocky,
looking back down the track I can say my two marriages bought me far more heartbreak and misery than happiness...Perhaps had I earlier met an Asian Girl, who found joy in serving then things might have been different, but trading your wealth, happiness and freedom for svexual illusions is a poor deal...To a young Man I would caution Later,to an older one never!

Men frequently err by talking too much. They often monopolize conversations, droning on and on about topics that bore women to tears. They think they're impressing the women when, in reality, they're depressing the women.

Interesting that a google search suggested simile for cohabit is to "live in sin" so perhaps another reason is to not be sinful?

orr.....

I don't see any real benefit to it.
It is just a piece of paper that guarantees you'll get reamed, one way or another.
It will cost you money, nomatter how cheap or expensive.
It will reduce your power in this world, reduce your capability to make change as you see fit.
It is not required to reproduce, though this might have been essential in the past for the benefit of the whole family, modern society has made it redundant, and celebrates the empowered single mother, so why complicate things? If the agreement you currently have between each other is working then marriage is pointless.

Right now I think women want it because it is a social statement, there is status that comes with it and they gain significantly from it.

"Already we are breaking down the habits of thought that have survived since before the revolution.......procreation will be an annual formality like the renewal of a ration card, we shall abolish the orgasm, our neurologists are at work upon it now..." Orwell -1984

I thought Oz was private... so yeah for the Americans here, they should trying to marry into one of those cultural groups. The other thing is dudes who go to the Philippines and want to retire early. They usually end up marrying some Filipina and then buying a house and staying long term. You have to like Asian women, the beach and early retirement though.

Not all of us were born in the land of the free and therefore we have to move abroad for the big $$$. I have much better access to China, the culture and the people from my marriage. Its a big deal there when you tell the average Chinese that you're married to the mob, more doors are open for you, especially in terms of the extended family. If you tell them you're single and looking to hookup, you've just opened yourself up to A TON of potential business as the guys with 'spare' daughters try and match you up. Marriage is the great uniter because once you're invested in the women, the people automatically assume you are an ally by default. I get better prices for everything, even healthcare as long as my wife is there. I can also go and hangout with other married guys [in Asia that's a different thing] and we are sort of looking out for one another's family, there is a camaraderie there that doesn't exist in North America. None of the guys over there are worried about their wives screwing around or impressing them or anything, so all of us have a ton of free time to concentrate on hobbies.

I've known and talked to the same guys for 10 years, they are all still married without problems and all have money in the bank, where b4 we were all broke. Chinese and money go together like peas and carrots. My one friend [who is an ugly split lip dude] used to work at Pizza Hut. He went over to teach ESL for a bit and ended up marrying a 30 y/o woman [gasp] who looked like a model. We were discussing about how to dump her when he got a call from her and left. A few days later he walked into a meeting, threw an iPad on the table and told us she had got him an apartment, filled it with groceries and magic cards. He ended up staying with her and found out that she was a heiress, her father owns a substantial part of Shenzhen. For his birthday he got several acres and houses in Venezuela and a set of magic cards. He had very little game but I did turn him onto the sosuave website, this was 10 years ago or so. She also put him through school when he came back to Canada and bought him a house and car in BC cause he was bored. Oh I forgot, he also owns a school now in China and hires teachers out of Pizza Hut.

There are also a few jobs where I would only trust my wife to watch my back. My wife and I are just finishing our PI licenses, so this is relevant. :D

We're a mix!
two payer for electives (dental/optical/physio etc) and you're taxed more heavily if you don't have this private form, their are multiple tiers and the highest includes private hospital.
most of our hospitals are public though.

No doubt. I am sure the five family in the Wuhan China region are looking for new partners and larger families right now.
