I gave up 4 months ago and didn't find it very hard.
The important thing to know is that you have to get the nicotine out of your system completely to overcome the addiction. That means no patches or gum and no cutting down.
Personally, I gave up smoking and turned to bulking up and working out, which helped distract me from the cravings and give me a good incentive to stay off the cigarettes. I did start eating more, but I made sure I was eating high protein/low calorie food to advance my bulking.
Also, try writing a long list of benefits from giving up and compare it with the benefits of continuing. It helps put it into perspective.
As Sazuki said, the first 3 weeks are the hardest, but after that you'll be glad you gave up.
