Alright, I'm lookin to gain some muscle. I've read threads and I have the jist of things(protein, workout routine). But I have a quick question, I dont like going to the weight room at the high school. For Christmas I got dumb bells and The Perfect Push-Up. Now, I was curious, push-ups are a great all around work out. But what can I do with dumb bells at home to gain muscle? If you can supply me with some workout names, I'll look up how to do them. Thanks.

Why don't you like going to the weight room. Bring an ipod, do your lifts and be gone. Or join a gym...idk how much muscle you want but if its a lot then i highly recommend going to the gym. You could even make friends as i have, just ask if your form is right or for a spot and throw some conversation in

This is a great simple workout-

This is how you should be eating like, although there are plenty of other options if you hate raw eggs or are against whey

So tell us, what are your goals? What is your weight?...are you skinny/overweight? Sports?

Well I don't like going to the gym at my high school because there's a bunch of old people there that take forever to get off the machines. And I do not own an iPod(crazy, right?)

I'm currently 6'1, 155 lbs(give or take) and I'm looking to pack on some muscle to fill out the rest of my frame. I did play football(Defensive Back), where my speed was used rather than my strength(or lack of).

That's interesting that your high school gym is open to older people. Most of the time you see this in colleges where they have older people they work with, or Alumni or what ever. Seems odd in high school, but each place is different.

I would suggest scoping out a time where they aren't there. Not only that, when I used to see old people workout on campus, they NEVER used the same stuff I did.

So if you mean 60-80yr olds are in there, I doubt they are under the squat rack or doing DB presses and what not.

You may be a little off the path and thinking what they use, you need to use. Should be the opposite.

I've worked with the older population before, and we would focus on balance, and would use bands, medicine balls, thera balls, and many LIGHT DBs and use machines.

I doubt it is that bad. Not to mention, older adults usually like to exercise early in the morning most of the time from what I have seen. Usually how it is.

My first impression before you mentioned them, was I thought you may be intimidated by the other high school kids that use the gym. This happens quite a bit where someone wants to learn or get into weight lifting, but because football players and other guys are in there, they are too scared they will get laughed at. Then the either go pay for a gym or dont do it at all.

NEVER let any of those people intimidate you. I was the same way once. In fact the first time I lifted was in COLLEGE. I hadn't the slightest idea what I was doing, but had buddies to help me. Most of the time you can find a few friends who lift to get you going unless you are the odd kid out in school.

The point is, we all have to start somewhere. I was just guessing you might have had that problem. But since you mentioned older people, I guess its all good

So you do have a time frame, and if you can use it, do so. Some people work all the time after school and cant go, and some just are too tired before.

BUT... Look at the opposite end of the spectrum. There are people working 7-7, 8-5 and they have time to go.

An hour is MORE than enough to get in and get out. You just have to make yourself WANT IT.

But I hear what people and kids get at. If I was back in high school, I would have been there from 6am-3pm or maybe after. I was on the drum line, so we were always there early in the morning. I also had to do homework, and did have a job a few days a week.

So to think of all that, who the hell wants to go BACK to school to lift? Or even that, who wants to lift at 6am, then go to school right after?

It would have been tough if I had lifted in high school. But what separates the people who succeed are the ones who are willing to do what it takes.

All of your athletes (you played football, so you should know) do the same thing. They juggle all sorts of crap and then sports.

Its tough, I am sure of it. And nothing says you HAVE to go at it full blown in high school either. It is all up to the person. I never became interested in it until after high school. In fact I always thought FLEX magazine was the most disgusting thing out there. Now I subscribe to every fitness magazine out there. ;)

I never saw myself lifting like I do now, nor eating like I do now. All of this grew on me, and I do ok for starting AFTER high school. Your still young and there is no rush on anything. Weights will always be around.

But if you want to get going and going good now, it will take some sacrifices. If people have time to play hours and hours of Rock Band and Guitar Hero and GTA 4, they have enough time to get their butts in the gym
