Yo I gotta quick question. I was messin with this girl that I just met at this cookout today, and normally I would be all quiet around girls but this girl made feel comfortable and she seemed to like me so I got bolder and playfully kissed her on the cheek, big mistake. After I kissed her a little later she told me she had some sort of kissin disease called Mano or some ****, she says that she breaks out every once in awhile and gets a sore throat every so often and some other ****. I'm like WTF!!. So I asked her if I was gonna get it and she said she didn't think so. But thats still enough to get my dumb ass all worked up and ****. So my questions for yall is do yall kno anything about this disease or have u ever known someone who had that disease, and can u get it by kissin somebody on the cheek? O and one thing I kno for sure now is that is the last time I kiss a girl I barely kno.

Mono is just a temporary things. I would check with her though, because Mono doesn't break out once in a while. Mono is like inflammation. It's not a continual thing it eventually goes away. The kinds of things that break out are herpes. So you might want to double check with her and make sure that's not what she mean, cause that IS an STD

What is infectious mononucleosis?

Infectious mononucleosis is a viral disease that affects certain blood cells. The term "mononucleosis" refers to the increase of mononuclear cells (white blood cells). It is caused by the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), which is a member of the herpes virus family. Most cases of mononucleosis occur sporadically. Outbreaks are rare.

Mononucleosis is also called mono and glandular fever.
Common symptoms of mononucleosis are:

fatigue
fever
sore throat
enlargement of lymph nodes
enlarged spleen
nausea
hepatitis
jaundice
headache
stiffness
muscle weakness
loss of appetite
sore muscles
chest pain
difficulty breathing
Incubation Period?

The incubation period for adults is between 10 and 60 days. The incubation period for children and adolescents is between 7 and 4 days.

Diagnosis?

The most common tests for "mono" are blood tests. An examination of the blood under a microscope may reveal an increased number of white blood cells known as lymphocytes. Other blood tests may show an increase in antibody levels (antibodies react to infectious organisms in the blood and create immunity).

How is infectious mononucleosis spread?

The virus that causes mononucleosis is spread by person-to-person contact, through saliva (on hands or toys, or by kissing).

How long does it last?

Mononucleosis can last from one to several weeks. The disease is very rarely fatal.

What is the treatment for infectious mononucleosis?

Rest is the usual treatment.

Can You Get Mono Again?

There is little evidence of repeated episodes of mono
What are the Complications?

The most common complication of mono is dehydration. Dehydration can develop because of inadequate fluid intake. Severe throat pain is often a reason why individuals do not intake adequate fluid. More rare complications include blood disorders, neurological and psychological problems.

Rupture of the spleen, a rare but potentially serious complication, can occur. The development of severe pain under the left rib cage requires immediate medical evaluation.

Forum on Understanding Your Labs: MonoI heard that mono was caused by a herpes virus. Is this true? Is is just like the herpes virus they advertise Zovirax for on tv that is supposedly a bad ...

Response from Dr. Holodniy
Herpes viruses are a class of viruses, of which there are several. Herpes simplex and herpes zoster are two types of herpes viruses and zovirax is used to treat both of them. Mono is caused most commonly by Epstein Barr virus (EBV) and less commonly by cytomegalovirus (CMV), both of which are herpes viruses as well. It is contagious. I can't speak to why the doctor prescribed the meds. They all may well have been appropriate. MH

Question: if i have mono can i give herpes to someone else

Answer: Mono and herpes are not the same thing. Mononucleosis is caused by the Epstein-Barr virus, while the cause of herpes is a strain of the herpes simplex virus (HSV). If you have herpes you can spread it to others through sexual contact whether or not you have mono. If you have mono and are having sexual contact with others, you can also spread mono to your partner(s).

basically mono is one of the 8 groups in the herpes virus family

however it isnt genital or oral herpes

it can be an std
it can also be a highly contagious virus passed like the flu

once it goes away , the person should be fine just like the chicken pox

Mono most commonly develops in young adults between the ages of 15 and 24. 1 The virus can be spread through contact with saliva, mucus (from the nose and throat), and sometimes tears
Once you have been infected with EBV, your body may periodically shed (or give off) the virus throughout your lifetime, possibly spreading the virus to others
Exposure to EBV often occurs in young children, but usually they do not develop symptoms of mono. However, if you are first exposed to EBV as an adolescent or young adult, the virus frequently causes symptoms of mono
The most common symptoms of mono include high fever, severe sore throat, swollen glands (especially the tonsils), and fatigue. Symptoms usually develop 4 to 6 weeks after being exposed to the virus. This is called the incubation period. Once symptoms develop, they usually last from 2 to 3 weeks.
Mono is not spread as easily as some other viruses, such as the common cold.
