Question about water

I was talking to a guy and he said that say 1 cup of tea does not equal 1 cup of water, and same for protein shake, or anything that has something added to water. He is not a scientist, and had no scientific explanation. His argument was that "...your body does not process water with stuff added to it as it does pure water". To me this sounds like garbage since you can drink water with a meal and the stuff ends up mixing in your stomach anyway.

So just to be sure, I want to see what people here say. The main reason is that most of my water intake is through protein shakes, and I do have tea almost daily.

On a similar note, does milk count toward water intake? I have not been counting it towards that, but it would be nice to know.

Water is water, no matter how you consume it. The guy is an idiot.

Actually that guy is mostly correct. I'm afraid you sir, are the idiot.

The reason why is water is necessary for hydrolysis of many compounds. So if you have a protein shake with 12 oz of water, it isnt quite the same as drinking a pure glass of water. The water will be used to both bind to the dry protein, making it consumable; and also to hydrolyze (break down into constituents) the protein in your gut.

Tea contains caffeine, which is a mild diuretic.

If you ONLY got your water from mixed sources (like shakes, tea, etc.), your body will certainly utilize that, but you would likely find yourself in a state of mild hypohydration. Any consumable liquid is hydrating to some degree, but you need to consume water by itself to ensure that it gets absorbed immediately and utilized in other important reactions and processes, not preferentially used in the breakdown and digestion of orally consumed nutrients.

It's recommended to drink a gallon of water a day for weightlifters, more on the days they are lifting.

This guy was saying that other liquids don't count towards the gallon. That's false, which you have also shown here. So I agree with you. The guy is an idiot.

Most of my liquid intake is my 2.2 litres of milk. Plus a bit of fruit juice/water when available.
I should probs add a litre of water on top of this then?

Add 2 litres of water on top of this, or drink more milk.

Chuck some 1L bottles in the fridge at night. Drink them the next day, and repeat.
