Question about Scotch

I had a drink of Scotch last night for the first time at my relative Boxing Day party. It was Johnny Walker Red Label and it was mixed with water.

My question is, what is the best way to mix scotch? Do people just have it on ice, or do they mix it with other stuff?

Most people drink good Scotch neat or on ice. If you really want to get a feel for what the drink is like, then sip it neat (no ice). If it's still a little too harsh for you, you can add a few drops of water to mellow it out a little bit.

Alternatively, if you enjoy ****tails you could try making something like a Rob Roy (basically a Manhattan with Scotch instead of rye), or experiment with other whisk(e)y ****tails and sub in Scotch for the bourbon, rye, etc. that they may call for.

Scotch is one of those rare treats we don't have the capacity to appreciate or understand until you've gone through quite a bit of other whisk(e)y's.

I had my introduction to it at my brother's wedding reception. I had stopped counting after 27 Jack and Diet Coke's when my brother's Father-in-law wrapped his arms around me and dragged me to the bar where he pulled (what I came to realize afterwards) a beautiful bottle of Glenfiddich. He and I drank the entire fvcking thing right there.

It was after that morning when I began my love affair with Scotch. Matching various Scotch straight malts and blends with my educated palate of fine cigars has been a passion.

So far, Cutty Sark ( with a splash of cold water ) and Rocky Patel Edge Battalion are a nice couple. Chivas (neat. In a cold glass) and the CAO MX2 are my two favorites for the moment.

Try different combinations and let me know so I can experience other flavors.

Or if you're like me, and cant stand cheap scotch, I've found goes good with rootbeer. Sounds weird though.

If you ever get the chance to sample some Johnny Walker Blue for free or cheap, TAKE IT! It is absolutely AMAZING, no matter how you drink it. Of course it's 2-3 hundred dollars a bottle, and 40-60$ a shot in a bar though.

Abso-fricking-lutely.

I was in the Johannesburg airport last month and they had Johnny Blue for something like 100 Rand (~$10). I got shyte-faced that afternoon. Also, they had Johnny Blue for the same price at the hotel I stayed at in Lesotho. I'm not a big scotch drinker, but Johnny Blue is absolutely fantastic.

I drink it with a rock or two.

This man knows what he's talking about. Blue Label JW is awesome. It's like finding money if someone offers you some. I have a few bottles from clients hidden away for later consumption, and if you ever get your hands on some do the same.
