hey guys,

I though today I should go for a run since last night I had a large easter dinner. I usually dont run but I thought I would give it a try.. I thought I would try interval running, 1 min of running hard, 1 min of rest.. I did this 5 times and I was dead. Now like I said I am not a runner, Im not terribly over weight, I use to smoke and have the odd smoke now and then. For the people who do run, did you start off like this and have it get better. Are the benifits of running worth it? Any help or advice would be great.

If you still have "the odd smoke now and then" you're still a smoker - so don't lie to yourself.

If you want to run to lose weight, jog at an even pace for 30 minutes a day first thing in the morning before breakfast. This is probably one of the best things you can do for better cardiovascular health and fat loss.

Yes, as I said above I am aware of this.

Thanks for the insight

Yup. As long as you still smoke you are a smoker.

When I was in utter crap shape the first thing I did was run in the morning for a solid month. Interval running, about 50 meters at LEAST 70% max speed/effort then walk for say 10 m to catch my breath (I smoke too) and finish off with another 50 yards hopefully 90% effort. Early on I would go for longer runs but soon found those to be worthless, I didn't want to be an endurance runner, I just wanted the cardio shock to up my metabolism & cardio for the rest of the day. So the rules I made were I didn't have to run long distance or even for time, I just had to run around my APT. complex no less than 50% effort.

Anyway point is after a week of being a worthless smoker with 0 lung capacity I joined kung fu and I regularly play basketball. A month later I have no gut. This was all due mostly in part of the interval running in the morning and actually managing my diet as the first steps. One major factor is running in the morning is usually a solitary exercise so if you get up early you won't be embarassed of your ****ty performance starting out. And no, running in place just isn't the same. You can't reach that critical 70% point.
