I attended a presentation recently, and one of the presenters was obviously very smart and knew what he was talking about, but could improve on some of these areas:
- Eliminate nervous ticks, which makes the audience lose confidence in you quickly (ie, playing with hands, leaning back, wobbling, laughing)
- Maintain the volume of your voice. If something comes out wrong, and there's confusion in the room or laughter, don't quickly get loud and say "No well blah blah!!" instead, calmly say "Let me reword that" or "What I'm trying to say is"
- Maintain confidence and speak calmly. Pretend everyone is paying $1000 to hear you speak. Everything you have to say is gold. Allow a bit of time after certain statements for it to sink in with people and repeat things if necessary
- Jokes or funny stories that are related to your material are great. Keep them short
- Build rapport with your audience, simply by being personable. They will pay more attention and be more open to asking questions or requesting clarification. Everyone should feel like they are engaged in a conversation with you, where you are teaching them something
That's all I can think of right now, hope it helps
