My question is that how, in general, do you psych yourself out for the workout so that you can get the most from yourself.

I know that for me there's this clip in "Pumping Iron" where Arnold Schwarzenegger is trading sets with another guy doing squats at an enourmous weight and when the other guy is almost maxed out arnold keeps him going. Eventually when he finishes, the guy falls on the floor from exhaustion. After that, in Arnold's interview, he talks about being a champion and that you have to constantly push yourself even when you think you can't do any more, and that those who can make it through the "pain" period will become champions and those that can't won't. I found that clip really inspiring and I watch before I go to the gym.

But I wanna know what all of you think about mentally toughening and psyching yourself out before you hit the weights.

I stick on some loud music, Heavy rock and metal. I find some sort of thing to focus on that makes me want to be better, or bring back a bad memory where I blamed myself and shouldnt. I think about all the times where I was weak, damn week, and make sure I beat it out of me as soon as the weight goes on my back to squat, the weights are set for deads, or the bar is loaded for bench pressing.

When I train, I'm becoming a stronger me - both in body and mind. I save all my negative feelings and anger to really push myself in the gym. I make sure it's all controlled anger and negativity, and I get it all out of me.

No one else can motivate me. It can inspire me, but it doesnt psych me up. I do that. I do it because when I go and give everything I've got, and another 10 percent, I can feel I've achieved and I'm doing it for a good cause - myself.

As soon as I'm out of the weights, I relax, keep myself hydrated, and really praise myself for giving my all everytime. I know I'm nowhere near as strong as half of the people on this board, but I dont care. Cause I try train with the most intensity and focus I can, and to me, there is nothing more satisfying than looking back on yesterdays leg day, and think how much of a killer workout it was.

That squat clip is ace though. Especially where that other guy is starting to really feel it, and arnold says 'Come on, lets get SERIOUS' like all of those heavy squats have been a pisstake. Another amusing part is where he talks about the pump being as good as having sex with a woman and cumming... the way he specifies a woman is very dodgy ;)

*puts on serious announcer voice*

There are illegal copies of the video 'Pumping Iron' available on the Internet, especially on peer to peer file transfer programs. The file is, assumingly, 700-800MB. I highly advise you do not download it and pay for the proper video tape.

That being said, I cant stop you ;)

Awesome movie. I love it, and it's definitely worth it to go pay for the DVD, which reminds me, I gotta go do that.

2 of my favorite scenes....

1) Columbu moving the car.

2) Columbu benching 315, then arnold makes him laugh (after 7 reps) and he drops it for a few seconds, then re-racks it like it's nothing... .crazy shyt.
