I've tried probably 8 or so different brands of protien powders over the last 5 years of lifting at the gym. I wanted to share the best i've found for those interested. I have listed them in order of effectiveness. I have tried Optimum Nutritions Whey and Premiuem whey (used it for 4 months) and also GNCs. They dont come close to the effectiveness of the following brands:

ASTs VP2
Cytogainer by Cytosport (Same makers of Muscle Milk)
Nitro Tech
MuscleMilk (Slightly fattier than Cytogainer)

I've always wondered about AST's claims...

AST-SS.com I believe is the website.

By effectiveness, I mean my goal is to put on as much lean muscle mass as quickly as possible while keeping the fats low enough that I don't lose a sculpted physique due to over-mass bulging.

I've put on very effective weight gains with Cytogainer, around 15 lbs of muscle in 3 months and I look more shredded since i've been eating good quality foods throughout the day.

I drink a shake around 11am and a one scoop shake about 30 minutes before a workout. Then immediately after a workout I do a full 3-4 scoops and hit the sauna.

I can only speak for my own experiences but I can say that Cytogainer has a great taste, mixes extremely well with water with very little clumping and helps to put in mass while also supplementing fats and carbs that are of a high quality variety.

Nitro-tech and ATS VP2 are better if you working on cutting since they contain very little fats and are made from the very highest quality protein ingredients. If I were going to be competing in 3 months, id switch to ATS VP2. For bulking and putting on lean muscle mass, I find amazing results with Muscle Milk and Cytogainer.

My daily calorie intake is between 3500 and 4500.

The quality of your protein powder is a TINY factor in whether you grow or not.

To attribute your gains to one brand of whey over another and NOT to red meat, eggs, total calorie intake, protein intake, consistency with training, squats, deadlifts, presses, dips and chins is just silly.

What WBA said.

Also - cytogainer and muscle milk aren't protein powders. They contain protein but they're not the same thing, at all. Whey is whey, doesn't matter what brand really. Some people can't digest WPC too well so they have to buy WPI, but it's still protein.

Powder is just a way to get a bit of extra protein when you lack it. I don't feel like eating meat in the morning and I burned out on eggs, so I have a protein shake with my morning oatmeal. But it's still not a substitute - just a simple way to help reach your daily intake goal.

I have not tried AST's protein, but I do have their Micronized Creatine and it's by far the best creatine I have bought. I have also tried the regular creatine monohydrate from GNC, and that **** is a waste. Taste's awful and doesn't work at all! AST has good products, in my opinion.
