I have a small tub of digestive enzyme tablets that I use when necessary. I try to avoid them because I figure the synthetic enzymes may decrease my body's natural ability to create its own, much like supplementing creatine.
I haven't used enzymes yet because of the cost, but I have wondered about the above point.
It would seem logical to me though that this wouldn't happen.
As we are eating more, more enzyme is required. If our bodies struggle to produce enough then we aid it by supplementation. We do NOT take horrendous amounts or anything but only (roughly anyway) what is required to digest the excess.
I don't really see how the body would know that you took enzymes anyway. There must be times when our own bodies naturally produce too much, and something must happen to this excess. It isn't as if these enzymes make into the bloodstream or anything, in effect there only really in the stomach digesting and nothing else.
Creatine makes it into the bloodstream and thus around the body. I know **** all about steroids but they will come into contact with the blood as well. Then the body can actually detect the substances.
Perhaps your body can tell how much enzyme is in the stomach or whatever, and whether it needs to produce more. But the whole point is you take it with a meal and because of the increased food intake you need increased enzymes. If you help your body it shouldn't stop making what is required if you were eating at say maintenance.
Just some thoughts, maybe some more people can elaborate...
