Anyway after the whole summer of not working out i decided to hit the gym today. After workout i went into a nearby store, got a $3 protein bar. had 29g of protein, and artificial sweeteners(yuck) and plenty of carbs which was good.

In the long run it would get costly to buy this. But once in awhile or an addition for protein supplement before and after workouts would it be good?

Search google for "protein bar recipes" and make your own! Protein Bars are good, but whey protein powder especially post workout is better. Remember, isolate protein is good during the day time while cassein is ideal before bed. I would recommend Optimum Nutrition's 100% Whey Gold Standard on bodybuilding.com at 5lbs for 28$.

Too expensive. Make your own from honey, peanut butter, whey, raisins and oats, maybe some wholemeal flour too.

Post-workout rapid absorption is optimal so stick to simple carbs + protein, preferably liquid for faster digestion, for instance whey powder + dextrose in water/gatorade/fruit juice, whatever.

Protein bars DO NOT contain sufficient nurtients you. I watch a Canadian news report that did study on several bars. They seriously deficient in many vitamins etcc.

I buy protein bars in bulk on eBay - 4 or 5 boxes of 12 bars at a time. At 20-30 grams of protein per bar, and the cost around $5 per box, that's about 45 cents a bar... they retail for about $2.50 (By the way, I eat ProMax bars - they taste just like candy bars)... $3 each is way too much; never pay retail!

They aren't good if you're eating them as meal replacements, however they're very useful for keeping in your backpack or car and munching on when you don't have time for anything else (or if you just need a pick-me-up or a quick infusion of protein to meet your daily requirements...)
