Hi I am going to a prom with a girl who is a good dancer and i want to look like I have a clue what i am doing.

I have read the dancing threads and am ok at solo disco dancing and the sort of grinding sexual dancing. But for the prom and especially with this girl i want to go for something a bit more romantic and old-fashioned.

Does anyone have any advice on traditional prom dancing-the holds, the moves, etc. Treat me like a complete novice.

I need to know where to hold the girl, what to do with my feet, and a few good moves.

The music will be mostly swing

hmmm....

I am not too familiar with the slow dance scene, but i can suggest is that you ask one of your girl friends to teach you?

You could also read about is, look for it on Google , see what sites u find, then read and practice with anything that resembles another human being, and even better yet, get one or 2 of your girl friends to dance with you for practice.

Not being able to dance too well isnt something that you should be embarrased about, so if you want, you can even ask the girl that u are going to the prom with to dance with you BEFORE to practice, seeing that u are not too good at it... I'm sure she will be more than happy to teach u and help u out there;)

Well... i wish you luck.. and most of all, ENJOY your prom and dont stress too much about it...

Learning how to dance by reading posts on a discussion board is like trying to learn how to ride a bicycle the same way. Either have her show you how to dance (which I highly recommend... she'll be appreciative of the fact that you're willing to dance in the first place) or sign up for dancing classes. Again, I think you should have her instruct you - not only do you get more face to face time, but you're going to get her used to your touching her, have more chances to maintain or increase her interest, and learn how to dance at the same time... for free. Or, you could do the dance class and learn with some overweight woman named Betsy-Sue, paying $100's out of your own pocket. It's a no-brainer.

True... but reading things about dancing will help you pick up tips etc on what to do etc.... and yes, it DOES help.. wont teaach you HOW to dance, because u HAVE to actually DO it to learn properly, much like riding a bicycle.... but reading about it WILL give u helpfull tips about it and what to do etc.

You'd want tips after you already know how do dance. If you've never played golf before and someone tells you "Go easy with the 6iron on the 4-par, tipping left will land you in the rough" are you going to be able to put that to good use? There's a reason why you aren't going to find very many instructions on how to dance on the internet - who can really learn to dance by reading:

Take your left foot, put it at a 45 degree angle from your right foot, about 4 inches away.
While moving your left foot in the air, shake it.
Hop from your right foot, still shaking your left foot, and do a full circle.
Place your left foot behind your right foot, then stand on both toes.
Move your right foot so the heel is hitting the ground.
Place your left hand on the ground between both legs.
Follow through with your head.
At the apex of following through, place your right hand on the ground as well.
Now put both feet in the air and bounce like Tigger.

I mean, come on. Videos, maybe - but why not just get the girl to show you how to dance instead? It's a lot funner than dancing alone in your room would be...

diablo.. u are correct... i am not dissagree'ing with you... all i am saying is that reading AS WELL AS learning with anotherr girl (her or one of his girl friends) is good, so he will be learning from them, AND picking up tips from the net etc... I am busy learning how to breakdance, and i am also learning the Salsa.. and i started reading about BOTH before even ettempting to dance them, and i found it to be of great help.

I don't think so. Even if she sees it as such, you're still getting the better end of the deal. She won't be around forever, whereas you'll have learned how to dance - something that will definitely serve you well later on down the road.

By the way, how do you think the couples that dominate the dance floor get that way? By practicing together...
