Hey all,

I've been mixing my post-workout creatine with grape juice while cutting. I always had heard that grape juice was important post-workout for an insulin spike. After FINALLY doing some more research on insulin I've now read that it is VERY BAD for cutting. Does it make a difference post-workout? Was the insulin spike only necessary in the bulking period and is now pointless? Should I just mix it with water (ugh)?

Any advice would be great. It would cut 70 calories from my diet. It would cut a lot of taste too, though. :p

You are worrying about nothing. Perfectly fine for you to carry on what you are doing. You still need the post-workout carbs and that is exactly the time your body can get away with it. Stick with the grape juice or any simple sugars for that matter.

An approach that will usually work to get lean is to keep your carbs centered around your workouts, before and after. Maybe some first thing in the morning but not much more throughout the day. This will reduce your daily carb intake and certainly in my case is all I need to do to get in condition. In such circumstances (i.e. when getting lean) my main - perhaps only source of carbs apart from the simple sugars post workout - is oats, due to the slow digestion and subsequent sustained energy. Taste good too, the perfect choice IMHO.

An excellent breakfast/meal whatever your training goals is a bowl of porridge oats mixed with milk and/or water along with 3-4 eggs mixed in. Once cooked, mix in a scoop of whey. Rememebr to add the whey after cooking so as not to degrade it with the excessive heat of cooking.

Thanks a lot Templeton.

The breakfast you are talking about is like the one I use. I usually have a decent size bowl (1/2 cup) of oatmeal with a little water and milk. I mix in a spoonful of peanut butter for some added taste. Not sure if that's a great idea but I'm not going about 35 or 40 on fat all day so I'm not too worried. Then I have 2 little cups (3 cups in a packet) of eggbeaters.

I'm glad to know that I only need to take creatine with water one day a week. Stuff is nazzty.

Having said all that. If you are cutting it is more likely the creatine itself rather than the juice which may keep u a little smooth. Seems to effect ppl differently, you have to see how you go. I think you will be fine keeping the creatine along with a good diet.

Ah yes Eggbeaters, never seen them over here. Would like to try them. Not sure I would like the taste of p/butter with my oats! I chuck in a little dried fruit to sweeten.

Personally speaking I find creatine tastes of nothing and can't really taste a thing if I ever take it in water.

If you take protien with the juice your insulin won't spike nearly as high. Try eating a bunch of fruit or a baked potato with butter and see how much your insulin spikes. Now eat those with a steak and it will level right off.

I love Eggbeaters. They don't cook or look like regular eggs but they are almost as good.

I'm not sure I know what you mean by "a little smooth". Do you mean it might be keeping me a little more fat? I know it will but I'm going to run with it. It'll make things all the more amazing when I stop my creatine cycle.

Peanut butter and oatmeal is good. Dunno why. :)

The reason why it would be bad to cause your body to increase insulin while you are cutting is because insulin helps to preserve fat cells in your body by metabolizing sugar instead of fat for energy. A higher insulin response causes your body to focus more on the sugar in your body instead of your fat stores as an energy source, thus keeping fat in your body. That's what the research means by spiking your insulin would be a bad idea. So remember, while cutting no big meals (BIG MEALS=HIGH INSULIN RESPONSE) and try to eat at least 5 small meals daily.
