Towards the end of a workout and for an hour or so after, your muscles are bigger and everything,

my abs show through properly, pecs are bigger, and everything just looks generally more toned and so on, I guess this is down to the extra blood going into the muscles and stuff cos I'm working them so hard.

My question is, how long roughly will it take for me to gain muscle mass so that my natural resting state looks the same as how I currently do post workout?? its like I've got a window to how my body is going to look in the future but I've no idea how far in the future that is..

at the moment I'm going to the gym about 3 times a week, and I'm increasing resistance weekly,

This is called "pump," and it happens because your muscle tissues are filled with blood, making them hot, red, and puffy. As you guesstimated, this IS due to you "working them so hard."

As for your question, There's no really good way to tell. If you lift hard and heavy for the next week, then give it up for a decade, it'll take you... »whips out his wrist calculator«... more than a decade. If you lift weak-ass weights, it'll take you... hell, it won't ever happen that way unless you drop a few pants sizes. ;)

Maybe it's time for you to start a cutting cycle to shave off the fat that's covering up your muscles? Have patience :)

ha ha, no need for that, I'm one of those tall skinny bastards, according to www.mybodycomp.com I have about 11% body fat. In the last 2 weeks apparently I lost 1lb of fat, and gained 5 of lean body mass, so my workout schedule seems to be working, although I'm not sure how accurate the site is..

there is no fat covering my muscles, i just have no muscles!! so I'm just going to have to stick with the heavy lifting

like you say, I need to have patience, its just a shame, you look in the mirror after a workout, and think, wow, I look great, but then a few hours later you don't look quite so great, its the way you get shown the way your body can look, which is then snatched away from you..
