As you have guessed from the subject, I am a computer science major. Girls don't usually picture computer science guys as being interesting, or entertaining, but I am both. I like to party, I like to workout, I like to look good. And I know there are more computer science guys out there that are the same. Last weekend I met a guy who was originally a computer science major, but decided to change to business econ because most of the CS guys were nerds.

How do I beat this image? I mean I can approach girls and have them think I'm attractive and have conversations with them, but it seems like once I mention I'm a CS major they get a little shy all of a sudden. It's like they're intimidated that I did computer science, or picture me as being a nerd even though I'm hitting on them and partying with them.

So ya. How do I beat this image? Do I just lie and say I did economics or something? Maybe I just need to feel more confident about the whole thing...

any thoughts?

Man, you are you in the 80s still??

In the 80's and maybe 90's computer stuff was NERD territory (see War Games etc.)

Now, its TRENDY

BUT

Cease from calling it computing science.

From now on, you say "IT"

I.T. is all the trendy shyt such as web stuff, internet, chatting, comms, email etc. ..

Just say you do "I.T" ..

(I work in IT, i know).

Its all about associations in people's heads.. comp.sci is still assoc. with maths, numbers, glasses wearing dudes, etc.

If this actually happened, I've never known a bigger retard than this chaad.

Secondly, let them have whatever image they want. If she pictures you as a 'nerd' from then on, she has no brains- would you really want to hang with something like that. Most good girls want someone who is intelligent. Now, anyone who just does one thing with their time is a nerd. If you sat around working on a car All the time, or if you sat around working on a computer All the time- you're a nerd.

Just have other hobbies and enjoy what you do.

Be yourself, you sound like a decent enough guy. If I were you I'd just say, "I'm studying to be in IT". People love the acronym "IT" (Information Technology)" it sounds cool and modern. They know it means you'll be rich :)

My one friend didn't do CS, but he's a programmer. He still gets hot women, even though they know he's a programmer. :)

Speaking as a fresh CS grad...

Honestly, I've rarely run into what you've said. When asked, "so, what's your major?" (and they always ask!) don't lie or anything. Why lie if you're proud of what you do and like your major? If she don't like it, that's her problem, not yours.

Are you mumbling, "oh... yeah... it's uhh... Computer Science." ("Crap. She's found me out! She thinks I'm a dork!"), or are you saying with pride, "yup, I'm in Comp Sci. I'm pretty good with the whole Systems Architechture thing, but it's the math that kills me, you know?" ("I'm smart. I'm not afraid to challange my potential. But I'm not a total geek. Not too many chicks I know are great at math, so here's a weakness that you can relate with.")

If you think you've hit a wall once you've said your major, you could try playing it off with C+F. "Yeah, it's a cool party. But if this goes longer than two hours, then I'll be breaking my major's 22 mandatory hours a day of no sunlight, no women, and only computer upgrading, Star Wars online chatting, and video games are allowed." You probably won't use that example, so roll your own.

Whatever. If you've got the great conversationalist, C+F thing down, and aren't the typical CS slob (if you're a CS major, then you know exactly what I mean) and are in decent shape and/or dress well, then being a CS major will round out the "whole package" and be a check in your column rather than a strike against you.

If all of the above applies and the chick is still frigid by virtue of your chosen major then NEXT her on her closed-mindedness or her fear of dating someone whose intellect towers hers, whichever applies.

Peace...

Most likely he lied. His real reason for switching majors is probably because the tech employment potential is currently in the dumpster.

I'm doing Computer Science and find this to be a bit of a problem. I don't think its that they think your a nerd or geek or whatever, it's more that a lot of girls will feel like your too smart for them, and that they're not clever enough to talk the same talk as you.

Girls that I know call me 'smart' and 'very clever', simply because I told them I do CS. I think as long as you don't look like a total geek, and can poke fun at the whole nerd/computer wizz thing then you'll be just fine these days.

Remember every type of profesion has a certain stereotype associated with it, I mean think of nurses, doctors, bus drivers, manual workers, lawyers etc. I bet when you read each of those words you associated a certain image with it.

It's all about attitude. When my GF introduces me to her friends the topic of careers usually comes up. She has a ball telling them that I'm a computer geek (over 18 years in the business). They are always surprised because of my appearance and varied interests. I even tell them proudly that I am a "Techno-Geek with Style" They all nod in agreement ;)

So being a comp-sci major is what you make of it and how you present yourself. Remember "And the Geeks shall inherit the Earth..." ;)

If you want to talk, talk to your friends. If you want a girl to like you, listen to her, ask questions, and act like you are on the edge of your seat.

Good sutf guys!

I agree with the general trend here. Girls who can't look past your major should definitely get the big N. FYI, I do dress nice and take pride in how I dress, look, act, etc, just like the rest of you guys (not that you were questioning me on that).

As for the IT thing. It's definitely the trend to call computer science IT, but I would watch out using IT as your title around other comp sci guys. For computer science students at my school IT people are a notch below CS people in terms of computer skills. IT people get a training in econ as well as comp sci, but don't go too in depth into either (again, this is at my school). I'm actually an econ major as well. I like to use the title of "Business World Ninja" that was given to me by a co-worker during an internship.

I don't think its that they think your a nerd or geek or whatever, it's more that a lot of girls will feel like your too smart for them, and that they're not clever enough to talk the same talk as you.
I experienced this a little with my last gf. She told me she was initially very afraid to talk to me because she didn't want to sound stupid. I remember at one point in our relationship she was reading a text book of mine, then looked up at me and said, "You're smart huh?" LOL. Um, ya? I didn't say it like that, but you get the idea. Thanks again.

I know some really trendy guys who are IT specialists..web designers, networking pro's

If you look like a nerd, feel like a nerd, and exhude the confidence of a nerd ..thats how the women will see you..

But if you arent a nerd..and you break the chicks stereotype of a Comp Science major..she will look past it..

I used to think all smart chicks were dorky and ugly..now whenever I meet a smart HB..I immediately get attracted to them

Don't always be the one putting yourself out for her. Don't always be the one putting all the effort and work into the relationship. Let her, and expect her, to treat you as well as you treat her, and to improve the quality of your life.

Heh, surely all of you can tell I too do Computer Science at my university. Here's a transcript of a conversation I held with a girl one Friday night in the most unusual of circumstances, but the conversation was "normal". This girl I kissed for the first time, the following day...

So, what are you studying here in Swansea Nick?

Oh, I'm a Computer Science student

Really? So you're a geek then?

Not totally

Really

Well, I'm five percent geek, ninety five percent hunk. I teach guys in my course how to be cool like me

(She rips my clothes off, and shouts on the top of her lungs "I've found the one! I've found the one!")
