The opening isn't from me, I've seen a member write about here, thought it was funny so I give it a shot a few times, here's one of the positive outcomes:
Of course it didn't go exactly how I type it, it's just what I remember best
Me (with big smile): Hey there! How are you?
Her (smile back): I'm good thanks, and you?
Me: Eh not so bad... Listen I need your help with something. My friend gave me a goal to approach around ten girls, like I'm doing right now, make small conversation, ask for the number, and the important part is I have to be rejected.
Her (amused smile): O.K... And what happens if I give you my number in the end?
Me: Well it wouldn't be very helpful, but then again it isn't very polite to turn down something offered to you... But all in due time, I'm Nick btw (put my hand forward)
Her: I'm Sarah
Me (shook hand, did the ''hand over the handshake'' thing): Nice to meet you, Sarah (I think it`s important to acknowledge their names, and it also helps me remember it
)
Me: So anyhow, out of curiosity, does it happen often that you get approached by random dude that end up asking for your number?
Her: Well it depends, I guess it does happen frequently...
Me (again with a smile): Frequently, eh? You sure you're just not stroking your ego a bit (kino'ed here by giving a lit tap on the shoulder, the kind of tap that says "yeah, I believe you, kiddo")
Her (laughing): I wasn't saying that to stroke my ego, I was just answering an question in all honesty!
Me: O.K... I'll let it slip this time (kino'ed again, by putting my hand on her shoulder for a short period of time and giving a "I understand" look).
Then we made some small convo about the place we were (coffee shop), I made sure to keep it light, she asked me what I was doing here, told her I came to study and draw. When she inquired, I told her I didn't like sharing my drawings with everyone and maybe when I'd know her better I could let her see a few.
[after a few minutes]
Me: Alright Sarah, well I better get back to studying, this finance stuff isn't going to teach itself.
Her: Whatever she just acknowledged
Me (gave her a grave, but mocking, look): So what will it be? Will you help me in my quest? Or are you still offering me that number?
Her (smiling): I'm sorry, but I won't be of much help to you today
Me (feigning deception): Alright, like I said it would be impolite to refuse, what's your number?
Her: xxx-xxx-xxxx
Me: Well it was nice meeting you, hopefully next person will be more helpful (playful smirk, winked and left)
After that I made sure to not look in her direction, looked absorbed in either my drawing or my studying. After about an hour she stopped by, saying she was leaving, exchanged a few words, and told me "not to forget to be polite about the number".
I donnu if I should have hinted at the end that she wasn't the first, nor the last, that I would talk too in such manner... Probably, but not sure. I tried to resume it as best as possible, any feedback, good or bad, would be appreciated. It is buttered up a bit but this is the jist of it
