I live in university residence first year...we have limited food options, we have a pizza place right beside us, and many people rely on that for at least one meal a day...me knowing better, tried to avoid it as much as possible...lately ive found mysefl pressed for time, and eating alot more pizza(the damn stuff is addicting). How much am i screwing myself, is there any nutrional value? should i try to limit as much as possible?

Oh ya, there's nutritional value, let me run this past you..

A smallish group of us went to pizza hut the other week after ice skating, and me and my girlfriend ended up getting a (large) stuffed crust chicken supreme pizza between us. Now, according to the nutritional calculator on the Pizza hut website, 1 slice of stuffed crust chicken supreme pizza has:

Energy: 289kcal
Protein: 15.6g
Carbohydrate: 33.9g
Total fat: 10.2g
Saturated fat: 5.9g
Salt: 1.6g

So that's 15.6g from just one slice. You'll prolly split the pizza into 8 slices, and you take 4 slices, so you get 4 * 15.6, which is over 60g of protein.

Granted, you could get all that protein from 2 cans of tuna, but you also get some good fats in there which are important for growth. So yeah, there is some good stuff in pizza (depending on where you get it a bit i guess), but obviously you won't wanna be feasting on it *too* much or you'll get a bit fat ;)

Go easy on the toppings and choose a multi-grain crust if possible (pizza pizza offers one). There's nothing wrong with eating pizza once and a while, but eating pizza every day really isn't good for you.

I'm in college as well and have tried avoiding eating pizza all year long. What do you guys "eating pizza every once in a while"? Once a month/once a week? Also, does anybody know which brand of pizza is the least unhealthy for you?( in otherwords the most healthy, although this is ironic)

I wouldn't sweat eating pizza every now and then. When you're young, your metabolism is high. As long as you get into the groove of a semi healthy diet when you're young, splurging every once in awhile is perfectly fine.

pizza with whole wheat crust, extra sause, less cheese, and pieces of whole chicken is pretty good for bulking. For cutting, do no cheese.

i disagree on the hold the cheese aspect but I'm a known dairy heretic.

the problems with pizza are:

- pizza crust is pure white flour, unless you can find some sort of whole wheat crust (multigrain and other options may or may not cut it, and it may be hard to get a handle on just how much fiber is really in it)

- my favorite topics, at least, are all high in saturated fat, sodium, and nitrates (pep, sausage, bacon)

- if the cheese is not at least part skim, it tends to magnify the above

you're looking for self-improvement? figuring out how to cook for yourself, in whatever circumstances, is probably the best thing you can do for your health, especially as a first year college student. you've got (at least!) 3.5 more years, and you're setting up habits that will be very hard to break in the future. you'll always feel pressed for time, from now until (and maybe after) retirement. maybe my expectations are unreasonable, but i expect even crappy dorms to have at least one kitchen. now, finding the discipline to seek it out regularly is another story.....

Now that's what I call a pizza. For a change of pace, substitute the marinara sauce for either a pesto or a garlic/olive oil mix with sun dried tomatos.

A lady I work with introduced me to an interesting pizza recipe a couple years ago. Take a piece of fresh zucchini, cut it longways, dig out the gunk, throw your pizza topings on it, and bake (at 350 I think).. you've now got pizza with a very healthy crust..
