The tot wears everything from dresses to pants, and Pop is usually the one who decides what to wear on any given morning. Pop's hairstyle is also changed on a regular basis, so it doesn’t provide any clues.

Well, that is just plain dumb. Is the kid going to grow up using both men and women restrooms too?

It usually is that simple, but in some cases you're wrong. There are plenty of humans who's gender you wouldn't be able tell one way or another, or someone who you're sure is a woman but has male genitals.

If the child is intersex, then I could understand this approach, but it would seem an odd (but not necessarily wrong) choice if the child is normal. In all likelihood (given a non-intersex child), this kid will end up figuring it all out and adopting a more specific gender identity, especially once he or she gets into the school system.

Many do, but others later decide to embrace their "third sex" situation. It's probably a discussion for another forum, but sexual assignment surgeries on intersex children who can't effectively give informed consent seem barbaric to me. It's a terrible call for a parent to have to make and the problem is society's unwillingness to accept things that are different (this is nothing new).

I don't even know whether this issue has bearing on the story in the original post, so I'll just stop here.
