If you are anything like me and were born after around 1980, you have been programmed to speak and write in BABY BOOMER DIALECT.

This manner of writing and speaking is now dominant and has been for several years. We have been indoctrinated into a gushy way of speaking that is fundamentally stacked in favor of women. It is all around us- on TV, in newspapers, in movies, and in everybody's mouths.

The habit is very difficult to break for men at my age, but it can be done.

This is sort of a grammar post, but listen up as you may find it to be useful--especially with the proliferation of texting nowadays as a communication method.

In G.I. dialect, there is no reason to justify things you have said with qualifiers such as "really", "very", "in my opinion," ":)", or exclamation points. When you have said what is on your mind, there is no need to apologize for it with pointless peripheral words or phrases that indicate femininity and/or helplessness. This is the result of a culture filled entirely with men who had previously been in the military.

The best way to explain this is through the following examples:

Boomer dialect: That's what I was led to believe.
G.I. dialect: That's what I was given to understand.

Boomer dialect: I don't think I really knew what you meant.
G.I. dialect: I don't understand.

Boomer dialect: Still confused... hmm... Would you be willing to clarify? :) Thanks! I'd really like to see what you mean
G.I. dialect: I don't understand.

Boomer dialect: Hmm... I don't see it like that at all, actually. But, hmm, I can see why you might? It's just -- it isn't really that way, is it?
G.I. dialect: I can't agree.

Boomer dialect: I do not agree with what you seem to be implying.
G.I. dialect: *silence*

Boomer dialect: One person most certainly can. :) Every day IS a gift. :) Yay
G.I.: One man can do a great deal.

Boomer dialect: Could you say that again, please? I didn't hear you.
G.I. dialect: Come again?

Boomer dialect: I've got to take this back to the store! It's all broken!
G.I. dialect: Back it goes.

Boomer dialect: Be aware that everybody needs help sometimes and it's okay to ask for help.
G.I. dialect: Be advised that access to medical facilities will be provided to you.

The difference may initially seem jarring and full-on G.I dialect is not for everybody (I am certainly not at that point as yet), but keep at it and you may garner more respect from men and women alike. You cannot fully become a real man without breaking yourself of feminist-speak. Always be natural because otherwise you may come off as affected.

Practice makes perfect.

lol I've always wanted to talk more like that anyway. Helps being in an JROTC class with people from the military who actually talk like that. Funny seeing as how the "boomer" way is more of how I talk, although with some slang here and there.

Me too, and unfortunately I am not completely rid of it--at least, not yet. I realized this was a problem recently and took steps to change it. I look back over old emails I have written and still cringe at their feministic syntax. Like a fish unaware of the water in which he swims, I was completely unaware of the wvssiness of my writing and speech.
