I've been listening to a bit of "emo" from the 70s and 80s, and a lot of it sounds quite good actually. Very upbeat, positive, treating love/dating like a fun game. Instead of modern emo which whines and cries about women.

Was emo actually good once, or did I just end up with a bunch of the best ones?

Well I can't remember the names, most I hear are from the radio, or in shops.

I did hear one in a shop, I think it was the beach boys, "Wouldn't it be nice". A bit cutsey, but more positive than 90% of modern music.

The Beach Boys aren't emo, they're like Surf/Pop. Here is a description from www.allmusic.com of what emo is:

"Originally an arty outgrowth of hardcore punk, emo became an important force in underground rock by the late '90s, appealing to modern-day punks and indie-rockers alike. Some emo leans toward the progressive side, full of complex guitar work, unorthodox song structures, arty noise, and extreme dynamic shifts; some emo is much closer to punk-pop, though it's a bit more intricate. Emo lyrics are deeply personal, usually either free-associative poetry or intimate confessionals. Though it's far less macho, emo is a direct descendant of hardcore's preoccupations with authenticity and anti-commercialism; it grew out of the conviction that commercially oriented music was too artificial and calculated to express any genuine emotion. Because the emo ideal is authentic, deeply felt emotion that defies rational analysis, the style can be prone to excess in its quest for ever-bigger peaks and releases."

Actually, it's the original emo. It's emo-core, and it resembles nothing that today is being called emo. The term was highjacked by the record companies to sell records.

I know some older guys who are into what they call "emo-core" who will tell you that emo was once good, and that nothing you'll hear being called emo today is actually emo. I haven't listened to it myself, but maybe I'll give it a try. Perhaps you've stumbled onto a forgotten genre that actually doesn't suck.

Tell her a little about yourself, but not too much. Maintain some mystery. Give her something to think about and wonder about when she's at home.
