Lewis and Clark did it all with ONE muzzleloading rifle (each man) for over 2 years, with their lives at stake . But today, just for SPORT, oh, you "need" a .22lr rifle, a .17HmR, a .22 hornet, a 222, a 243, a 270, a 45-70, a 375, a 458, an AR-15, a 20 gauge, 12 ga, 10 ga. Ferchrissakes, man. Can't you see thru that bs? It's nothing but making you think you have to spend money. If you spent that same money (or the time you'd spend making that money) reloading 3-4 rd-shells/guns, and shooting it (with proper discipline of course, you could do it all, without having to have a $1000 vault in which to put 20 guns, and worrying about theft, corrosion, etc. Also,you won't be confused about how to work all those different "feeling"/operating guns. Cause you'll have only one type and you'll have 10-100x as much practice with it.
At the very most, you need an AR15 in 223, a .22lr conversion unit for it, a 12 ga auto shotgun and a 308 auto hunting rifle, like the Remington 748 and realistically, you don''t need the shotgun for small game. You can take the small critters with the .22lr unit. The 308 is for big game at ranges beyond 100m. But a skilled hunter and marksman can stalk to within 50m and brain the critter with the 223. It's about sport, not survival. So you CAN just let the critter GO, and hunt him again another time, you know.
If you can't get the sub-50m brain shot on a given day, so what? Nobody's going to reject you or kill you cause you failed to "bring home the bacon" that day.
If it really was about needing the meat, you'd want a silencer, luminous sights, and the .22 unit with subsonic 22 ammo, so that you could score the birds/rabbits that you notice while actually trying to take a deer. You'd also be using snares, traps, nets, bird-lime on roosts, bait, jacklighting at night, etc. You'd hunt year rd, you'd take females and juveniles, etc. But you don't do those things, which is proof that your hunting IS just for sport. Since it's just for sport, WHY shoot the animal in the chest, at 200-300 yds, with the 308 softpoint and have it run/suffer for 10-90 seconds while it bleeds out, hmm? Why not the instantaneous death of the brain hit with the 223 softpoint? cause you aint rifleman/hunter enough to ensure the latter? Then why not just stay out of the hunting fields, since you're inept and it IS just about sport? Bowhunters manage to get within 50 yds of the game animals ALL the time, so why can't you do the same (and make that brain hit with the 223 AR)? Hmm? Let's hear your answer. There aint any.
The AR15 is useful for sniping, for home defense, for shtf, for picking off crows and prairie dogs at long range and for Bullseye and combat match competition, all year long. The big game hunting bolt action, or the 22? not much! Some guys get a lot of enjoyment out of hitting clay pigeons all year with the shotgun, but few of them are adequately skilled with the sidearm that SOMEDODY needs to defend themselves, every few minutes in the USA. That somebody CAN be you, easily, and anywhere, and you'll WISH that the time and money spent on clay pigeon busting had been spent on fast draw and rapidfire pistol practice.
