Okay so i've eaten 'normal' oats you mix with milk and microwave for 2 minutes to give you the porridge like stuff but recently saw someone mix oats in with his protein shake. Was just wondering if i could do that with the oats i have atm? does it not matter whether or not i 'cook' the oats?

edit: cause mine are big, round and flat i was thinking of blending them with the protein powder + water. that sound alright? i won't die from not microwaving the oats will i?

No you won't die haha but you may gag on the oats since they are big. Get some sort of Quick oats. They are made smaller so they cook faster and thus won't turn into huge chunks in your protein shake that make you gag.

Steel cut oats are the best, but they're expensive and they take a lot longer to cook.

unless you find truly raw oats (which are rare, because they go rancid quickly), uncooked oats are fine to eat -- they're steamed to prevent spoilage (this also prevents them from sprouting). for example, lots of 'multigrain' breads are sprinkled with some uncooked oats for texture & appearance.

the only difference between steel-cut, rolled, instant, and other types of oats is how much they've been machined. no matter what type you pick, a blender will make short work of them, so there's little difference between putting steel-cut, rolled or quick oats in a blender (for making shakes, avoid 'instant' oats that are full of hard-to-pronounce ingredients). pick the cheapest by weight, or whatever you would use for other purposes.

if shaking your mix by hand, the stallion is right, go for quick oats that will blend better & more quickly.

Awesome information. And i'll be shoving some of those oats into a blender + protein powder + water to make my shake so i guess i don't need quick oats. However, if i ever see any on the market i'll get them.
