No car yet, but get a motorcycle for summer?

I have no car yet. I'm "graduating" high school this June. I don't have my normal license yet, but I might go for my motorcycle license first (IF it's possible here).

The reason why I'm considering getting a motorcycle (crotch-rocket) first is because gas prices, summer (not as much rain here), and its THE perfect chick magnet.

Getting a motorcycle will be MUCH cheaper itself and for gas.

I NEED a motorcycle to get to work and back... and leisure time.

I plan on using my summer pay for a car for fall, and winter, etc. The ONLY bills I'll have will be paying off my motorcycle loan.

When fall comes, I'll use my summer pay to buy a car that can take me to work/college and back.

Sound like a plan?

I don't know the bank loan, adult-real world lingo yet... if you reply... you might need to explain yourself.

-----

These types: Green, Red... flashy colors (with a matching leather jacket and helmet).

//Edit// Not something to kill myself with. A small engine 250cc, but still flashy... something to take me to work on the back roads in about 15 minutes at speed-limit. Or, about 5-10 minutes on the highway at speed-limit.

If I do get a bike, I'll have to try to not give into temptation (hopefully).

Man... it would be badass.

Jesus Christ. DO NOT buy anything above a 250 or YOU WILL DIE. You probably will anyway. Pretty much everyone I know who uses a bike has spent weeks in hospital or died at some stage.
'on the highway at speed-limit': Goodnight.
I ride a GSX1000 and that's after years of the small stuff, and my insurance is still astronomical. Try a 150cc step-through or some trail biking experience (i.e. learn how to come off) before you go and buy a bike.
That said, peeps in my country are wack jobs on the road, had a guy on a Ducati pulled by the fuzz doing 220k in a city bypass tunnel a few weeks ago. Good thing the fuzz have Monaros (I think you call them GTOs)

You mean you can't afford a car, so you want to just buy a death certificate?

Sure, go ahead. I have a relative that works radiology. Motorcyclists get pretty f*cked up. I also have a friend who rides motorcycles, and if you honestly are a noob, you can kill yourself easily. So don't just get a bike because you think it's cheaper. There's a ton more that goes into it. It's not just the bike. There's a lot of gear you have to get too. It can be more expensive actually, depending on what you get.

And of course, there is the risk of death. Sure, you can die in a car, but the chances are much higher on a motorcycle. My other friend was in a motorcycle accident last summer and fractured his leg in 7 places.

take the money you save on gas and multiply it 5x and that's how much you'll be spending more on insurence they you would if you bought a car.

new driver + a killer bike = HUGE INSURENCE PAYMENT!!!!!!

like averything else, learning how to ride is about pushing boundries, and learning how much you can lean, and brake.....eventually you'll push it too far and you'll wipe out (AVERYBODY DOES).....Its why i don't ride, even though i got my licenece.

yeah well, my dad bought a pretty old Honda Interceptor like two years ago thats like a 150cc or less... He told me I can practice on it... THATS when i started to think about getting a motorcycle.

He used that motorcycle to practice on before he got a cruiser.

i AM going to take the motorcycle safety classes also... it's free for me since I'm 17.

i was thinking 250cc was small? what's a nice sport bike that's under 250cc and doesn't look like a tiny dirt bike, still looks badass, and is safer (hard to use safe and sport bike in the same sentence)?

First off, don't listen to most of the original posters. Some sound like they've never even been on a bike. Others sound like they just have no balls.

I've ridden over 20,000 total miles on a GSXR 750, a 600 standard, and a 250 standard. I live in WA and have ridden EVERY SINGLE DAY this year...from rain storms, to wind storms, and a couple times, even when there was snow on the ground! I can wheelie, do burn-outs across a lot, power stop, and carve pretty damn far...and let me tell you, I've dropped my bike ONCE, in a parking lot, at like 2 mph due to a grease spot.

I'm not saying you can't get hurt. There have been an EXTREME amount of potential accidents when I've been riding. It might just be that I have good instincts and a hella lot of luck, but I've never been involved in a serious collision.

You CAN get hurt riding. To me though, it's worth it. Riding is more to me then just zipping around on two wheels. There's a certain "feel" that becomes part of you after you ride. Most people in this world, including the poseur scooter-riders above, don't understand this and can only spit out the danger statistics of riding. To say it short, they just "dont get it."

When it comes down to it though, regardless of what the chicken littles of this world will tell you, you CAN make riding a lot safer. First off, start on a 250cc. The Ninja 250 is good. Hell, you can even wheelie that thing. Always be cautious when riding. You should ride, ride, ride. Practice quick stops in the parking lot. You should have total domination over your bike. I can lock my rear tire at speed, skid several feet, and still have enough control and balance to maintain my bike and myself. Proper riding gear is also crucial. That means boots, pants, jacket, helmet, etc. Honestly though, I think it's overdone. I usually just cruise around with some shoes, jeans, and a Wilson's jacket. Sometimes you have to just say **** it and ride to the beach in the summer with just some shorts and a tank top. Nothing gets the chicken littles of the world more than seeeing a guy riding on the freeway with his tank top flying to the top of his back. They'll point out the dangers while of course their girlfriends just will want to f*ck the living sh*t out of you!! One time I was stunting on a hot night with a friend at like 2 AM with just a tank top on FULL SPEED on the highway in front of this car full of chicks. They rolled down and shot some photos. Good times but NOT SMART. I would not do that nowadays having riding a lot more.

About it being cheaper though, I don't think it's cheaper. In fact, it can be more expensive. Riding takes a lot of balls and confidence, AT ALL TIMES. Therefore it's a more stressful experience. If you're riding it as your main means of transportation, you might soon realize it's not very convenient or comfortable. As a 20 yo college kid, I solely own a bike due to cost, but that's because I couldn't imagine NOT having a bike.

In regards to chicks, it's cool, and they'll like it. But it won't get you laid. I've given plenty of chicks rides on the rumbling vibrator, and they like it. But make sure you KNOW WHAT YOU'RE DOING. Remember, weight distribution changes a lot of stuff, especially stopping and turning. You don't need to be an ass in order to impress her. A safe ride is a good ride. (Of course, that doesn't mean it's not fun to be an ass sometimes with a chick on the bike anyway...as long as you can contorl it!!!).

One more thing. Don't be one of those poseurs. Nothing irritates me more than poseurs on their R1's or CBRS with the full racing ensembles and stickers who can't even properly lean into a turn. If you own an R1, you better be able to wheelie that baby into oblivion and use its power like it should be used...not taking it to the local grocery store at 35 mph while wearing your full-on racing gear. Don't be like those losers.

Wanna make insurance cheaper? Get a NAKED sportbike. Kawasaki builds some sweet naked sportbikes. The SV650 standard is a great all-around naked sport bike by suzuki. The Honda 919 is a great naked sport bike. But for a 250 at the staget you're at, stick with the Ninja 250. Get it used too. They're cheap. Best time to buy though would have been in the Winter.

Before I started riding I was intimidated by all the danger talk. Then I just bought one anyway. From then on it's been nothing but the greatest. Every single time I go out I know I can possibly die, but to tell you the truth, it doesn't matter. If you like it the way I do, you do it anyway. You don't need to be confined by fear because you've "let go" of yourself. It's freedom, something that the majority of people will never even understand.

Anything less than 250cc is ridiculous.

This just isn't true. Ya, riding is about pushing boundaries, and sure you MIGHT go too far and go down but MOST PEOPLE GET UP.

Stop being a wussy.

Yea, for motorcycle endorsement you need class E and then you get the endersement. Those you need a license anyway.

A bike will be more expensive than a car. Think SVT Countour, Taurus SHO, those are fast cars that equal and beat porsche boxer, you can have one for around 5k.. A dissent bike will cost you as much.
