THE bra market is expanding, literally. Up to 40 per cent of Australian women now buy bras with a cup size of DD or higher, new figures from lingerie suppliers show.

In the 1950s, the most common bra-cup size was a B - three sizes less than a DD.

Modern breasts are getting so large that some bra companies have introduced cup sizes as high as K, The Sunday Telegraph reports.

Experts blame the cleavage boost on obesity, contraceptive pills and artificial hormones.

Myer lingerie buyer Kerryn Sawyer said sales of DD-plus bras have grown from about 20 per cent of sales to 28 per cent in just five years.

Many lingerie labels such as Berlei and Triumph are now offering G cups while Fayreform, Freya and Le Mystere are producing select styles up to a size J.

Berlei brand manager Jane Edser said the company's range of bra styles, available in DD-plus, had, increased since 2005 from 75 per cent to 83 per cent, to cater for the growing market.

But still they make clothing for women with small breasts, so the rest of us are stuck with the choice of either gaping buttonholes or clothing too large for the rest of our bodies....

Bra company Eveden Australia launched a K cup into the market last year. The company's fitting specialist, Victoria Jubb, said obesity contributed significantly to the expanding chest sizes but the number of small-figured women with large breasts was on the increase.

"We're noticing a lot more girls with small backs and bigger bust sizes being fitted," she said.

Eveden's top-selling size is a 10G.

As women's chests have grown, the number of breast reductions have doubled in the past decade, said cosmetic surgeon Mark Goyen.

"There's definitely been an increase," said Dr Goyen, who runs Sydney surgery the Alia Clinic. "I was doing about 10 to 15 female breast reductions a year, now I'm doing 20 to 30.

"There's no question that because the population is bigger their breasts are bigger as well, because it's all fatty tissue.

"As women get older the amount of fatty tissue increases, and also the proportion of fat increases."

Sydney cardiologist Ross Walker said artificial oestrogens found in foods, plastics and cosmetics had also contributed to the growth spurt. Oestrogen in contraceptive pills also spurred the growth of breast tissue, Family Planning NSW research director Edith Weisberg said. "I think the higher-dose pills could, because the oestrogen causes development of the breast tissue," she said.

Larger, more cumbersome breasts often discouraged women from exercising, said body-image expert Jenny O'Dea, Associate Professor at the University of Sydney's Faculty of Education and Social Work.

Dr O'Dea said that makes it even harder to lose the weight and can lead to further increases in breast size.

"One thing I find in my body-image research is that girls and women with large breasts tend to avoid sport and physical activity because it becomes a bit bothersome," she said. "They stopped exercising when they developed large breasts, whereas we want big women to do the complete opposite and be as physically active as they can."

I stopped reading after I saw the word "obesity". I remember reading an article in a business paper a while back about some BBW clothing store in the states. It mentioned the average American woman was a size 14.

I dont understand how fat girls can look and their blubber in a mirror and think its sexy. Sure, fat tits and asses are fun when youre tanked, but you gotta be crazy to but a ring on that. Dumb hos.

they know they look like trash, i am certain of that. Its just that their desire to eat prodigiously and not exercise overwhelms their desire to attract men and be healthy. Which ruins things for men, because it places an extra premium on the few females out there who are hot.

I live in Australia, and I can vouch for this article. Australia is similar to the US in terms of obesity levels. Similarly the women here have the same attitude as American women. Most people think Australia is a paradise with blonde bronzed bikini clad women, but this is far from the truth, it's just like the US or UK.

Fortunately for me, I date Asian women so avoid most of these problems.

Many of them do though. They think that because their tits are big that men will find it attractive. Fat tits disgust me.

Now, saying that. Australian women have massive cans. Compared to what I have seen worldwide, these women have some of the biggest knockers I have ever seen. I dont know if its something they put in the chicken, but Aussie women in general have bigger tits. So while a lot of them may be fat, I do think that the average girl out here is just packing a little more heat.

Best in the world though are still the Eastern European women. God was in a really good mood when he created that lot. Not just size but shape. Im getting horny just thinking about it.

Then why dont they jump their fat asses on a treadmill? I cant help but to stare at these women in disgust everytime i see them. Today i saw the FATTEST girl at fedex and couldnt help but stare. I just dont get how WOMEN eat so much that they weigh 350. Fat disgusting slobs with no self respect...no thanks.

They say that the sizes themselves in clothing are getting bigger. Meaning a size 10 is a lot bigger than it used to be. I guess the makers of the clothes figure that girls will rush to buy anything they can fit in that has that status symbol size.

My thought was that maybe they are doing the same with bras, and making D cups smaller than they used to be. So now maybe girls who wore a C before can have the status of being a D cup.

in fact, they are so much bigger that you can now get a bra as big as a K size.

so lets recap:
1.the common woman has bigger boobs in 2009 than a woman did in 1950 or even in 2005.
2. some women have big boobs because being fat.
3. some women have big boobs because of their birth control contraceptive.
4. some women have big boobs because of artificial hormones. (such as in your food)

ok thats easy enough to follow.

i agree with it because 5 years ago in 2005 my own chest size was very small 32a.
i have put on 10 lbs and now weigh 110 lbs. therefore i wear a 32e or 32g, which are very uncommon sizes and only one maker with 2 lines makes these. (fantasie and freya) and it is common to pay 80 - 120 bucks for a bra in my size.
i am not obese and i am not taking any hormonal birth control (got my tubes tied) so therefore it must be the artificial hormones they are spraying on the veggies and giving to the animals to eat (meat and dairy) that must be affecting the spurt that i have had.
