I have a new idea that I think may work and I have no idea what to do or where to go with this idea...

Do I phone up a company in the same field as my idea and tell them the idea?
Do I seek financial backing for it and if so where do I go for this?

Anyone know in general basically if you have an idea that you think may work where you can go to seek approval for it and get the go ahead?

....what is it? Is it something that will need financial backing?

As far as financial backing, it depends on what type of business it is and what your personal financial situtation is like, as well as how confident you are in your business model. if you are VERY confident, as it foul proof, and you have decent credit, try to get a regular business loan. if there is more risk involved, look for a venture capital firm or an angel investor... however the angel investing scene has sorta died out the last couple of years. I still have some VC contacts and I can put you in contact with some of the people I know.. one of the biggest scams (and most profitable) out there are venture capital scams.. people who want you to pay them, to find people to pay you....yeah. i emember I went to a meeting like this is LA and the guys were all dressed up, and they started throwing around all the amounts of numbers they can raise for them.... and I blurted out... "let me get this straight.. you can raise us 10 million dollars...but you want us to pay you $5,000 to do so beforehand?"....then we promptly walked out and caught the next flight back home.

i would sit down and right a detailed business plan. it answers a lot of questions for investors and yourself. it makes you think of things you normally wouldn't think about. Explain how you will turn a profit. Explain how LONG it will take to turn a profit. what are your intentions for the company? To sell? to keep? IPO (was ours, however I sold my shares and quit)?

any other questions you have, let me know.. I've been there done that.. what you are going though is a very exciting time. you are going to have some very, VERY tough times ahead, from some very unexpected places, and it takes alot of character to get though thoose times.. but it's a wild ride.
