I'm trying to loose weight and was wondering if I should be drinking protien shakes, if so which would be the best ? I've heard whey, but I don't know. Also, is it better to eat carbs before or after a workout?

When i excersize i eat lots of carbs before although not right before and i eat a huge amount straight after but i am in to serious sport here. If you want to lose weight you want to be buring more calories then you take in and make sure you excersize a lot aswell because it burns claories and stops muscles breaking down, with out it your muscles would breakdown instead of fat.

Why protein shakes? carbs are good as long as you are burning more, most importanlty have low fat food, avoid sugar and alcohole.

lifeforce please explain to me why protein is a necesity whilst cutting. Dam i miss read the original post i thought he said excersize but he said working out, so like yeah the protein stops the cuting from destroying your muscles aslong as you work your muscles which is where the working out comes in to play

next time i will just read the post more acuratly

For the first part protein is more difficult for the body to break down so it has the most thermogenic effect of all the macro nutrients. It's also used to rebuild muscle and excess protein will be used as energy. This makes sure that the body get more protein that it needs so the muscle loss is minimal by providing all the necessary amino acids in great quaintity. Other than that there are a number of different positive traits of high protein intake. I read an article a long time ago about the benefit of hight protein intake, I think it was on ironadditcs. If any of you have the link please post it.

Carbs in large amounts are not good for cutting either, they store water and make you look fuller effectivly demoralizing you and make you look like you don't make any progress. Get enough carbs to maintain your training, but don't cut based on carbs.

are you sure excess protein is used for energy? protein is a source of energy, kuscle is broken down for energy during excersize but because protein can not be stored like fat, the body gets rid of it so unless you are refering to taking protein during or shortly before workout/ excersize the excess protein just gets wasted. Even if you take it during, ask any professinal and you will find a lot of mixed oppinions on it. Personaly i think the energy you would gain from excess protein during working out would be minimal, its probably more about replenishing muscles during workouts which is why my cycling energy bars contain some protein aswell.

Excess protein is broken down in the liver and turned into glycose. During workouts I need the carbs, that's their role to give me more energy.

i googled it to verify what you are saying and it says it is actuly turned in to carbohydrate not glycogen, it takes further time for carbs to be turned in to glycogen meaning it is not very usefull.

GLYCOSE not glycogen. The rate carbs are turned into glycose depends on what kind of sacharid they are. BTW, I'm eating them about an hour before the workout not during the actual workout.

oh thats diffrent then, when i cycle i do most of my eating before my longest ride of the week which is on sundays, through out the whole week i just get my glycogen stores as high as possible.

After that for the next 2 hours i eat a load of carbohydrate and protein whilst walking aorund a bit as light excersizeis better then sitting around for recovery.
