There seems to be a disagreement between everyone I know regarding whey protein. My family says it's supplements, not natural, and therefore not healthy. The owner of a gym I used to go to, who happens to be an ex-heavylifting champion in Canada, is of different opinion. My friends are divided as well. Personally, I'm all in favor of it - it helps me make gains, and I haven't seen any side effects for about 3 months now.

So, who has final proof that would settle this argument? Are there long term effects? Or is it simply another case of people being scared of what they don't know?

The irony here is that some of these people you mention are probably eating some of the most unnatural, unhealthy, and overprocessed foods there are.

Whey protein powder is basically just food. Very protein rich food. There's no harmful additives of any kind in whey protein powder, unless you're taking some weird stuff.

A google search brought up this.http://www.wheyoflife.org

It is possible to have too much of a good thing, which in this case will give you diarrhea and kidney damage if you eat a ridiculous amount. A couple of football players at my college almost lost their kidney function because they had the bright idea that if one serving was good, then one giant can must be better.

Some brands can give you bowel trouble, others have flavourings/sweeteners which you might be allergic to.

Whey in itself is perfectly healthy, treat it like any other protein source.

Isnt it unusual that the only people to say the above sort of thing dont have a CLUE about lifting/diet?

I get this a lot too and I nearly blow a fuse, people telling me this and that about supplements and how its bad for me - how the fuk do they know?! Everyone thinks they're an expert in regard to lifting/diet, which they obviously are not, and it really REALLY pisses me off.

Did they read 100's of hours of articles on supplements, did they research all the facts/findings for hours on end before they came up with their 'opinion'?

I think not.

Whey isnt bad for you - BOTTOM LINE!

Hey man,

Whey protein is just that -protein. Nothing else.

Think of it this way: when cottage cheese is made, theres this tasteless runoff called whey that, in the past, they just used to feed the cows or something.

It was then discovered that whey had an extremely high protein content. So instead of throwing it out, they put it in powder form and sold it to body builders.

It's no less natural than cheese.

Everyone gave a pretty good explaination of whether or not whey protein is healthy.

It is very healthy just as MetalFortress said, it's a by product during the conversion of milk into cheese. Ever hear that old children's song "little miss muffet, sat on a tuffet. Eating her curds and whey..."

that's the very same whey that is in protein supplements. Or it's the protein from Soy Beans when you get Soy protein supplements.

here's an article explaining what and where whey comes from.
