My wrists hurt after heavy presses

Hey fellas,


I prefer to use heavy dumbells to work my upper pecs (usually 65-70#), but after I do it my wrists are someimte inflamed and sore.


I think that the reason for the pain is because I tend to rest the dumbell on the palm of my hand when I grip the weight and press it on an incline bench (that means my wrists are ****ed back slightly and my palms face the ceiling). Should I be gripping the dumbells so that my knuckles face the ceiling (like how your knuckles would face directly forward when you're throwing a straight in a boxing match) instead>?

I think it's an issue of putting too much pressure on my joints. Any suggestions/technique improvements appreciated. Cheers. ;)

I'm not sure what to say, do you grab the dumbbells extremely tight? Because I know that can cause a problem too.

don't let your wrists come back towards you. if you lay your arm on a table and clench your fist thats how you should look when you do bench press or anything like that.

are u talking about incline dumbell benching?

Definitely don't let your wrist hang loose. Your arm all the way up to your knuckles should form a straight line. Pretend you are punching someone.

Yea, that's half the battle..proper technique :p. Also you could work on grip strength (google it), which is all in your forearms and your hand development. I've found that with stronger grip my wrists hurt less alot of the time when doing BB work, but they never hurt when doing DB work so make sure you keep proper form.

Thank you Captain Obvious - but it's still good advice.


And Jesus, no offense, but put those weights down dude. You're gonna end up a 4 foot midget if you do heavy weights when you're only 14. :eek:

Wrong.

First - heavy weight does not stunt growth (unless he's a weakling and has weak growth plates, which is very unlikely if he supplies his body with proper nutrient)

Second - Some people at the age of 14 already start puberty, that is, a lot of hair on their armpit (my college-educated son still can't grow a beard) and are already 5'6+ feet tall

Third - You don't know him, you just basically said he hasn't grown over 4 feet yet

I'm totally surprised by jakethasnake's ignorance.

I must admit that I'm no 'expert' on teenage bodybuilding, but dayum boy - you are aggressive sometimes. :D Thank you master, I have learned my lesson.

Lol, thanks for caring though :)

But, actually that's an old wives tale that bodybuilding stunts growth. I read somewhere (forget where, can't source, so I'll say Stats Can, haha), that unless you squat over 700lbs, running puts more pressure on your spinal column.

I'm about 175/180lbs, 12-13% bodyfat, 5.6 1/2 - 5.7. I'm a big guy, but I'm well informed ;)
