Which properties (except for price) are important to consider when deciding which protein supplement to buy?

1. Percentage of protein to product (i.e. how much in a serving) - 75% is the absolute lowest you should consider (also the cheapest).

2. Whether it's pure whey or a whey/casein mix - different proteins, different functions. Avoid products with soy proteins added.

3. Flavour - makes a big difference, I'd rather throw down a protein drink I like the taste of; if you're getting unflavoured this doesn't apply.

4. Sweeteners. You might be allergic to some of them.

5. Fat/carb content - shouldn't be an issue but some proteins are kinda high carb. (can't name any off the top of my head)

I think that's about it .. maybe someone else could suggest some more.

Assuming you increase the dose, is there a problem having 70/30 whey/caseine instead of pure whey post-workout?

Yes IMO. Casein is slow digesting, and pwo you need fast acting carbs and protein - hence pure whey or egg protein.

If there's nothing else available then go for it, but it's far from optimal.

What I meant was increasing the dose to the point where you will get as much whey as you would if you had gone with pure whey. Will the extra caseine then in any way be slowing down the digestion of whey? I would think the whey is digested quickly, while the caseine will provide a protein source for many hours.

Or is this just a waste of protein? Should more protein just be in enough supply in the ppwo meal?

Casein is BEST used at night, before bed, so it's slow releasing protein keeps you nurished as you are fasting(sleeping).

It can be used in conjunction with whey-type protein sources as well during anytime, however.

The overall digestion is slowed.. so just putting in more of the whey/casein blend doesn't really achieve anything except, as you say, you waste protein.

If you've no other option go for it by all means; another option is egg whites pwo. Pwo makes a huge difference in my opinion, the quality and quantity of protein in that window of opportunity is extremely important to making serious gains.

For example, if you're not gaining, double your pwo protein - you'll see the difference (provided the rest of the diet is in check). Therefore, the important of pwo nutrition can't be stressed enough. It's the one thing I'd never skimp on.

Casein is fine any time of day you don't need fast-acting protein. It's mostly taken at night but I have it for breakfast too. (the same effect as casein can be achieved with regular whey with added milk or flax/olive oil if you go for pure whey)

Sounds cool. Why does milk/oil slow down digestion speed? Just out of curiosity.

Casein is slow digesting, as is fat.
