A 5 gram dosage before any mental activity (paying attention in class, driving long hours) significantly improves my performance. If I am sleep deprived before any of these activities (less than 7 hours), I tend to dose off, but not if I take that fish oil dosage. One time I didn't take fish oil before driving and I got urges to dose off. I took 5 grams and I stopped getting those urges. One time I did take my 5 g dose, but I did not take fish oil for the last 3 days because of busyness/lazyness. I got a minor urge to dose off and I knew those urges would get worse. I took 3 more grams and I was fine.

As for 20 grams a day: when I upped my dose from 15 to 20 grams a day, it significantly improved a chronic dryness I have in my right hand. My right hand has had chronic dryness for over two years now, I used to have to put ointment on it throughout the day. At 20 grams a day, I don't, just occasionally I have to rinse it in cold water. My hand still looks messed up though.

I'm going up to 25 now, I'll let you guys know if I see any differences.

how do you know it's not just psychological? there are studies out there with very valid arguments with key points telling us that the body goes through changes we believe to occur. Feel free to doubt me on this but personally half the things i hear seem to all be psychological. Whether it be cures for cancer, old wounds clearing up etc. There are written journals you can go look up as well if you're interested. (just can't remember any off the top of my head atm, sorry)

but, kudos for the fish oil, i have a large tank of them but i havent been taking them cause of laziness, if it'll cure this problem i seem to have with concentration then i'm all for it. 5g's a day it is.

Nothing better than testing this stuff out and getting your own results to show validity. Unfortunately I can only afford 10-15g at the moment, which blows.

I think It was Dr Di Pasquale that recommenced 30g a day for skin conditions.

10-15 grams of fish oil is plenty. 10 x 30% EPA/DHA concentrate is still 3 grams of active omega-3s.

Based on the current research over many peer reviewed studies, it appears 2-4 grams of EPA/DHA daily is the sweet spot.

i don't get acne since i started fish oil. i didn't even notice this until i saw a picture of myself from before and it hit me that i don't remember thinking about acne anymore or bothering with any kinds of acne creams anymore... not that i had a problem to begin with but most everyone gets little ones here and there but i seem to get far fewer since i've been taking a tablespoon (doing 2 now) since the beginning of the year. I used to get them on my forehead and now that's been really rare.

For the mental benefits, I've tested it many times. Every time I was slightly sleep deprived and didn't take the fish oil, I got madd cravings to dose off.

As for the hand, I didn't do too many tests. I haven't significantly dropped from 15-20 since I've started.

hmm, well either way it cant hurt to eat 5g's a day and i have a large load so, if that'll lead to increased concentration im all for it.

I'm starting to wonder if it's possible to get 'dependant' on fish oil. I take it too, and notice a big difference, but I also notice a difference when I don't take it.

dependent as in your body needs omega3's from EPA/DHA? yes, but it's not an addiction. they are ESSENTIAL fatty acids for a reason.

how much is in your 'average' fish? like asian's fry fish on the frypan and just eat it like that, how much can you expect from that kind of dish?

from most fish, especially white non-oily fish (cod, halibut, etc.), they store most of their fat in their livers, so you're not going to get much omega-3 from eating them pan fried or grilled.

oily, cold water fish like salmon have a significant amount right under the scales, but you'd have to eat a lot of salmon (a moderately expensive habit) to affect how much you should supplement with fish oil.

It takes longer than a few hours for the fish oil omega3 to acculumate in the cell memebranes, but I speculate EPA/DHA may be affecting blood glucose/ blood lipid levels in the blood, making you seem more mentally alert.

'Incorporation and clearance of omega-3 fatty acids in erythrocyte membranes and plasma phospholipids.' in Clin Chem. 2006 Dec;52(12):2265-72Epub 2006 Oct 19

To answer your question on omega-3 content of fish, check out the AHA review. Their is a table that of the various omega3 content of the fishes.

http://circ.ahajournals.org/cgi/content/full/106/21/2747

Download the pdf files to view the figures better.

Oily fish like sardines, herring, and mackeral have high concentrations of EPA/DHA in muscle as it requires colder temperature to 'wax' out, so it is an adaptation to be more fluid at colder ocean temps. I beleive one 3 oz serving of sardines 1-1.7 grams of EPA+DHA. Tuna has some too ~ 0.5 g EPA+ DHA serving. Yes, some accumulates in the liver, but most deep water fish actually have the EPA/DHA in the muscle itself, with lesser levels in the 'liver.' Lets not try to eat fish livers due to high vit A content as well as increased potential for accumulation of toxins by the liver.

I take 15 grams of fish oil per day and I used to have a horrible ache in my right forearm. Not anymore. Although I can't give all of the credit to fish oil I can say that my skin is in a bit better shape. More elasticity and I get less razor burn when I shave my head and face.

nope, money's tight right now so I'm doing a minimum of 10 gram/day.

Haven't noticed much difference though. I started using ointment on my hand again, but its just a little bit in the morning. It is fine for the rest of the day as long as I rinse cold water occasionally.

I used to have to put ointment on my hand continuously throughout the day before when I was only doing 10grams per day. Maybe my chronic hand dryness is somewhat cured.
