Yesterday.
i drive to uni. 20 minutes. 0 car problems.
i drive home from uni. 20 minutes. 0 car problems.
i drive to work. 15 minutes. 0 car problems.
i drive home from work. 15 minutes. 0 car problems.

i go and start my car to go out again, doesnt start. its old, so i just pass it off. no worries.
and i take mums car.

this morning, i'm driving to gym. car starts, but its having some troubles. i'm almost at gym, and it turns off. it wouldn't start again.

went back 3 hours later, it started fine, drove about 50m and it stopped.

its an old peice of cr*p.

it'll cost me everything its worth to fix it, or i can piss it off and buy a new car.

i have about $5k. i'd need about $8 or $10k for something decent.

my parents will lown me cash interest free, but it means that i won't have money to blow on things whenever i want.

eg. clothes, gambling, drinking, phone etc.

i'll have to watch my budget and stick to it etc. thats something i haven't ever done before.

it'd be good to learn, but i don't want to learn.

it'd also be good to have a nicer car to date girls in, but i'm a tight *ss.

ALSO i'm very keen on traveling, and i think that within 3 years i'd like to go over seas. do i want to spend all that money now and not have as much later?

i need some opinions guys.

cheers.

(also, with the price of petrol at the minute, this car was costing me about $60 a week, a new car will cost me < $30 a week i'd imagine.)

If i were u, i would get a new car, sell the one u have now, and get a JOB, even if it doesnt pay a LOT, its better than nothing. Now take out the petrol money and all other expences, and then save up so that in 3 years time u will be able to go over sea's.

ok, sorry, i left a couple of details out.

being that i'm a "don juan" and have been coming here since.... i don't know? sometime in '03 probably, it'd be VERY poor form for me to be unemployed.

I am a full time student. but also work. I pull in probably about $240 a week after tax. i spend tonnes of money on alcohol. alot on clothes. alot on eating out. alot on petrol. there isn't much left over.

240 a week after tax whilst studying full time isnt too shabby at all, really.

I'd definetly get a car... what kind of cars are you into? Hunt around, i've seen some gems for 5k.

And i'd pull back a little on the drinking/spending etc and maybe exchange for a bit of extra work/study, but thats just me.

Well then it is time for you to prioritize. Spend less on alcohol, spend less on clothes, don’t eat out as much, and try and minimize your driving.

Alternatively, why don’t you look for a higher paying job? hmm.... When do you finish studying? surely you will be able to get a FULL TIME job after your studies? So when u do, that’s when u can make the money you need to travel etc?

If you have a goal though, then set it, and do whatever it takes to reach it, even if you need to cut down on some of the luxuries that you are use to.

see guys, thats my thing though.....

....i MIGHT have to cut down on drinking/spending. but i REALLY don't want to. i love it.

be very hard to get a better paying job, i get $25 an hour and can virtually work whatever hours i choose. they also give me full time every school break. summer (australia) break is november-march fulltime at $25 per hour. hard to knock back.

i just don't know if i want to be in dept. it seems like a step backwards.

but another old wreck of a car doesn't seem like a step forwards.

i just don't know.

$25 an hour, mind telling me where you're at/or what you do?

How much sleep do you get? Cut down on that, work more = nice car.

Well I would get the car man... I mean.. you NEED a car.. its something that is a must IMO, going travelling u can save up for in the future, and if you really want to, then you will HAVE to cut down on certain things, thats life, it isnt fair.

In terms of finding a car, you can find a decent one for $5k. I think that's around $3500 US dollars, and I know you can get an okay car for that cheap. Try just getting a mid- or early-90s sedan. Some good ones would be: Acura Legend, Honda Accord, Toyota Camry, Volkswagen Jetta, Mazda 636, etc. Most of those you can get for around that much money and they'll prob have around 100,000 miles on them. All of those cars should run well beyond that number though, so that'll be fine for you for now.

Boo hoo! Your parents will loan you money(interest free) to get a new car. You know how many people would love to be in your situation? But, oh right, you can't stop drinking and pissing away all of your money on stupid, frivolous things! Get a grip man. Take mommy's money, get a car, stop getting so wasted, pay mommy back. End of story.

Sounds like an alternator to me.

When you try to start it, does it turn over?
Did you have your lights on while you were driving? Were they going dim?

How much sleep do you get? Cut down on that, work more = nice car.
Amen to that. On Sunday & Monday I worked a total of 42 (forty-two) hours and I broke the bank.

I worked a total of about 110 hours since last saturday... I can take the next month off and still be sitting very pretty as far as mortgage/bills/insurance/etc.

well, i forgot about this thread..

but looked it up because my car is dead again.

i got it fixed for $200.. it was the distributor..

it didn't drive ASWELL as before.. but it drove. until just now. i wanted to go to gym, couldn't leave my driveway.

i think i'm taking "mummys loan" probably just borrow $4/5K and put it with the rest of my money and get something reliable, that'll last me a few years..

looking at something smaller (petrol costs to much) maybe a honda civic/peugot 306/Volkswagen golf. they seem to be the least girly looking girl cars :)
