down to chest/shoulders. thats the rack. press directly up, once bar passes forehead, get your head under the bar. in the end the bar is behind your head. :D

Some people lower the bar to their chest, some people do it to chin level, some even to eye level. Find out what you can get away with. Chest level can be hard on some people's shoulders.

Is it okay for me to not put my head under the bar when the bar gets to around forehead level, or will this cause injury?

Whenever i've tried it i go flying backwards with 30+kg over my head :nervous:

control it, that's how you're supposed to do it. properly aligns spine with arms.
and don't ***** around and just rack onto the chest/delts.

Keep your elbows at or above 90 degrees. Anything lower just wreaks of shoulder injury. Everyone is different, so if you feel any pain (I'm not talking soreness I'm talking aching pain) in your shoulders, adjust your work out accordingly. Trust me, screwing up your shoulder is NOT worth it! It's an injury that can plague you the rest of your life.

If you don't bring the bar all the way to the rack position, how do you breathe? I think it would be kind of hard to breathe in and do a Valsalva maneuver while holding a heavy bar by your chin. Plus it's not full range of motion.

I don't go past 90 degrees. I had a torn rotator cuff and you don't want that. Also remember to pull your shoulders back to line everything up.

Again, how do you do a Valsalva maneuver that way? If you are holding the weight at the top and you let your air out to breathe in, you are going to lose support right at the top part of the lift.

You're right. The time I tried it I felt a bit unstable at the top of the lift. I guess it would be similar to breathing during overhead squats.
