Lunges causing knee pain

I tried lunges with dumbbells yesterday evening, and today I woke up with an aching knee. Having checked up on lunges carefully before I did them I know that the knees should be kept at a ninety degree angle in the forward state, and that the knee should not go over the toes. I tried to stick to this, but even so, my knee hurt. About twelve years ago I had a knee damage from running too much on pavement, or so the doctor said, and I would feel it every now and then for years. Haven't felt it for a long time now, but maybe that is what is causing the knee to act up even if I do the lunges well.

So: anyone have experience of lunges with dumbbells or barbells; is it common that they cause knee pain? I'm pondering whether I should keep doing them or abandon them.

hmmm , fvck it. sometimes some exercise are just not meant for your body.
take my asshat shoulder girdle for example.
my shoulder girdle is allergic to dips, flyes and DB press of any kind. it just outright hates them.i cant do these exercises because i get a sharp pain in my scapula.

your body might not be designed for lunges.try something else, like squats maybe? or stiff legged deadlifts?

do you do any other leg exercises? squats, legpress, leg extensions and so on without worry?
did you warm up properly?

you can always strap it (I won't do legs without my knee wraps because of the weight I'm pushing)
start off with body weight and slowly build up to your max in 3-4 sets to really warm up for that exact exercise

i stretch and warmup properly, I use wraps for squats, but lunges I dont, I have a barbell on my shoulders for them.

stretch warmup and go light, work your way up to bigger weights.

A lot of joint problems are caused by escalating the weight too fast and the tendons and ligaments arent strong enough or warmed up properly.

Don't do them. Screwing up the knees is not worth it.. take it from someone who has 2 family members with replacement knees ;(
