I need a good site and I have been looking.

Since I am pretty lonely these days (my gf isn't helping; so vain, so hollow) and I have raised a chihuahua when my cousin was out in college and a friend's doberman so I have an idea of what it takes to raise a dog.

I don't really care how much the puppy may cost (at long as it's not over $10,000 which I have seen and is really unreasonable imho) and how tiring it is, as long as it comes with no problems. I'm currently seeking a german shepherd. Anyone can give me some pointers?

If you have raised a german shepherd, please share your experience. I hear they're the smartest dog. :)

That is undeniable but it was just a way to start a conversation. :] Hence the, 'I hear'. Ya hear?

I'm not sure dogfancy, akc, and other sites like that are really trustworthy as dogfancy is like a newspaper ad section.

I am also not exactly looking for info (as I have done enough of that research). I am looking for reliable sites. Like - http://www.kraftwerkk9.com/ but more so I can do some comparing and picking.

I've already said it wasn't good to pay $10,000. If you get a stray dog you run the risk of it coming with problem, and if you pay for it to get diagnosed, surgery (and other tidbits) will run you more than $10,000.

,girls need to have the best of the best they are willing to pour out thousands of dollars for something soo stupid roayal line bread dogs that can fit nicely into their bags O..o
A Paris Hilton-esque doesn't run down here. Unfortunately I don't see girls here having to have the 'best of the best they are willing to pour out thousands of dollars for something soo stupid roayal line bread dogs'.

I wouldn't generalize if I were you. A lot of girls here in NY look at Paris Hilton with pity, not pride or a role-model worthy type.

He's right about rescuing dogs though. There's no reason to buy a dog from a breeder when thousands of dogs are sitting in shelters waiting to be loved or euthanized.

Also, where do you live? You need a lot of space for a large dog, and it's totally irresponsible to have a dog like a German Shepherd if you don't have the resources (time, space, energy) to care for it. If you have all those things, then go to your local shelter and save a dog.

EDIT: If you're worried about health problems, then you absolutely should not buy a purebred. Purebreds have a lot more genetic defects due to rampant inbreeding done to produce show-quality dogs. Stray dogs are a lot healthier genetically.

I am looking to avoid problems that's why I chosed breeders, both of the dogs I took care of were from breeders which gave me good impression. Not to mention learning quickly and obedient (except the chihuahua who refuses to sleep alone cause she's scared of the dark). I have heard extremely bad things about dogs in shelters like weak hip or not well taken cared of.

I live in New York (the core, not upstate) and live with my gf so there's a lot of room for my new dog to run around in. And since I am a businessowner I do have all the time I need. Money isn't a problem (as I said, so long as it doesn't cost an upstate's down payment).

AKC is about as "trustworthy" as they come, my friend. If it's a pure bred, it's ONLY a pure bred due to the AKC. Otherwise, it's a mutt. They know just about everything about any pure bred dog. Temperament, Loyalty, Trainability, Diet, Physiology, Ancestral lines, etc.

If you want a healthy pure bred, then chances are you're going to have to find a local breeder. Dogs off the internet aren't shouldn't be your first choice, due to the fact that it's likely those pets are coming from puppy mills, or from a person who isn't a true breeder, but rather just had puppies. Actual breeders only breed their pets a few times a year, and use word of mouth to sell the pets. If you're 100% determined to get a full pure bred German Shepherd, I'd ask around in your town. Maybe at pet stores, see if they know anybody.

What you've heard about "weak hips" (called hip dysplasia) is at least doubly true of purebred dogs. It's become a major problem in the last 10-20 years due to the demand for purebred dogs, which results in unsafe breeding practices. Mongrel puppies aren't any worse-behaved or less healthy, on average, than purebreds.

Obviously I can't talk you out of buying a purebred dog, but it really is irresponsible to buy a purebred (unless you're going to show it) when you could make the life of a shelter dog immeasurably better. Just think about it :)

I've got two mutts, I happen to like them better than pures as well.

I must emphatically disagree that owning a purebred is irresponsible. I have two pure bred German shepherds, both in excellent health, btw. I tried to get a shelter dog first, but quite honestly many of them are worthless and should be euthanized. When you have been around a high-quality working dog, you come to expect a lot from your animal. 95% of shelter dogs will never amount to much. They lack genetics and training.

When you get a GSD, the European ones tend to have more drive. This is only good if you are around to work the dog. Drive in a neglected dog is a horrible and destructive thing. American shepherds are a little physically larger, and tend to not have the high-strung drive of the European lines.

The female shepherd I have now is of a Hungarian line. Her 'grandfather' was a v1 champion of Hungary. Although her intense prey drive can be bothersome at times, she is the smartest dog I have ever owned, and I have owned a lot of smart dogs. She was $400. You don't need to spend much more than that to get a fine dog. Dogs in the $5-10k range are usually priced that way because they have undergone intensive training.

I think the myth that 'shelter dogs are just as good' is perpetuated by animal rights activists who are well-meaning, but misguided. Buying a purebred animal preserves the breed, and if it were not for the AKC and breeders, then all dogs would devolve into mongrel curs. Yes, the animal shelter is a sad place, anyone who loves animals can see that, but the blame for those animals rests on the irresponsible people who let their dogs get pregnant, and even worse, the people who casually drop dogs off at a shelter to become someone else's problem.

German Shepherds are awesome. I've owned two of them in my life. They're smart, loyal, and obedient. If I were to ever own another dog, that would be my choice.

I'm coming from a perspective where I love animals and don't believe that any of them are "worthless" or that any "should be euthanized". I also believe that an owner can provide the training that a dog from a shelter needs, and that any owner that can't provide it or is unwilling to put in that work should not have a dog (or any pet at all) in the first place.

That said, it sounds like you know your dogs and they sound beautiful. My family has a purebred Westie, so I've been unable to convince them either :(

Exactly. The point is, blame doesn't fall on the animal, and therefore they don't "deserve" to be euthanized. While tens of thousands of dogs in shelters wait to be destroyed, encouraging the production of many, many more by going to breeders, and all but ensuring the flow of sad dogs to the euthanasia chamber remains constant, is irresponsible.

I understand the need for a purebred if you intend to work the dog (as you appear to do) but for just a regular pet, shelter dogs can definitely be as good, with fewer health problems.

I can see merits to both sides of the purebred/shelter dog debate. There are some breeds and types that are the result of irresponsible breeding. I once owned a blue collie. He was beautiful, but the rest of his genetics were awful. He got heartworms, and then died by getting his head stuck in a fence; call it death by stupidity. A shelter dog could not have been much worse than that blue collie.

The unhealthiest breeds tend to be the very big and the very large. The farther away that breeders get from the size of the wild coyote/dingo sized dog, the more health problems the breed encounters. If you are worried about hip dysplacia in your gsd, don't buy the biggest male you can find. One of the many benefits of gsd genetics is that appearance was virtually ignored when creating the breed. They were bred to work, not to have a uniform appearance. There are GSDs in every color. I think this helps their overall health. Hips are the major problem with GSDs, but if you buy from good genetic stock, the risk is minimized.

When you get a puppy, crate-train it from the time you get it if it stays inside. Doing so will make your life much easier.

Ha, completely off topic, and rather juvenile, but substitute the word woman/women for all references to dog or shepherd in Bible's post, and it's pretty damn funny. And no, I haven't seen the Borat movie yet.

All my 5 are purebreds - one black lab, 2 corgis and 2 chihuahuas. Man, I thought my corgi was a babe magnet, but I swear women practially orgasm when the see my chihuahua.

I think we're gonna stick to smaller dogs now. The lab has caused about $6,000 in damage to my backyard (fencing, spa, deck, etc.), and the chihuahas travel much better in the new motorhome since their crate fits.

People still tease me for the whole "big tough guy, tiny dog" thing, but I dig my little dog. What's funny is I used to despise chihuahuas, then one day the wife brought one home, and he was my dog from day one. The other dogs (including the 100 lb. lab) are all submissive to him. He's my "tiny tyrant" :woo:
