Lifting without a spotter?

Hey guys,

So I'm trying to devise a workout plan. I want to buy some free weights for lifting. But I have a problem: I live in an apartment all by myself. What should I do for a spotter? Should I just join a gym? My apartment complex actually has weight machines, but I want to use free weights.

Any advice appreciated.

Buy a rubber mat.

Do deadlifts and variations

Overhead presses

Chins, bent over dumbell rows

bench press, you'll need a bench;)

You could train for ages and get big and never do squats etc.

The trick with benches is do them before OHP and don't go to failure. Then do OHP, if you fail a lift it's ok.

A few months gym subs will easily pay for all your weights and they are yours for life.

buy a rack OR do dumbell bench press and hack squats.

with the price you will probably spend on free weights you may as well check out local gym memberships. Personally I had a hard time being consistent when I worked out at home. I joined a gym meet some folks and had an easier time. I quickly established a schedule and when I would miss a day the people working there would bust my balls about it. Kind of gave me the extra kick in the nuts to not miss a workout.
