I'm to perform a speech on the 17th, we have to choose any statement to agree/disagree with.

I chose the statement "Life is what you make it" as this is something i believe in with conviction and i think this will capture the interest of my audience - speaking about something i have a passion for.

The only problem is, I'm trying to think of someone famous who had a poor childhood but managed to turn their life around and make it theirs. I've got examples in the back of my mind but i cant actually fully remember them!

Any help would be appreciated.

One problem though, the speech I am doing will be performed in front of my English class. It was found out today that a pupil from our school died of cancer, I never got the pleasure of knowing him, but of the people that did the news hit them very hard. A few girls didn't attend our English class today because of this.

I found his talking about death most relevant to what my speech is about, and i would like to incorporate his views on death in my speech , but do you think this is bad timing and may be seen as inappropriate considering there was a death of a student today?

I would say the best subject for a life turn around is Tupac. But he died at 25, so I don't know if you want to write about that. But just the fact he came from hell and became a millionaire just screaming his anger and pain to the world and now is remember and loved by many seems to be a good example to me. He also encourage people to never give up. =] But hope you find a good example.
