The Sexy, Healthy Scent of a Man

The scent of a man (at least, as suggested by the behaviors of lab
mice) can actually determine whether a female is likely to want to
mate with you, a new study shows. The research suggests that
humans as well may choose their mates in part based on the
strength of their immune systems, as revealed by their scent.
Previous research has shown that female mice prefer to breed with
males whose immune-system genetics are DIFFERENT from their
own. Such selective mating leads to healthier offspring, and as
such contains survival advantages. Researchers at the University
of Maryland examined molecules known as peptides that originate
in the immune system and are present in urine, among other
things. A female senses and remembers the scent of a male's
peptides using her vomeronasal organ, located inside her nose.
"Exposure during a critical period to urine odor from another male,
will prevent embryo implantation, leading to loss of pregnancy...
while exposure to the FAMILIAR odor will not," said Frank Zufall of
the university's School of Medicine. So it appears that Minnie
Mouse really knows what she's doing!
Stinky T-shirts
Similar peptides exist in the human immune system, though it's not
known exactly how good we are at detecting them any more. Our
own vomeronasal organs seem to have been rendered mostly
defunct by evolution, many scientists now believe, though there is
still some uncertainty about this theory.
The question of how scent affects a woman has been widely
debated in recent years. In 1996, Claus Wedekind, a zoologist at
Bern University in Switzerland, conducted what's become known as
the stinky T-shirt study. Wedekind had 44 men each wear a T-shirt
for two nights straight, then tested how women reacted to the
smelly shirts. Like mice, women preferred the scent of men whose
immune systems it turned out were UNLIKE their own.
If a man's immune system was similar to hers, she tended to
describe his T-shirt as smelling like her father or brother.
More research is needed to determine to what extent a woman's
nose leads her to the choice of a particular mate, and how adept
she is at picking out a genetically well-matched partner. "We
cannot rule out that other parts of the human nose are still able to
detect these peptides," Frank Zufall said. "We can now ask
whether peptides are present in human secretions such as sweat
and saliva... whether they can be detected by the female nose, and
if so, whether they have any influence on our social behavior."

Ah-ha!... so... whether or not a woman ultimately digs you has to
some extent been linked to your genetics as revealed by your body
odor... amazing! If your immune system "matches up" with her
own (whatever the hell that means), her unconscious mind may well
come to regard you as a... brother... or even her dad! Yikes!
