I was wondering if anyone on this board does Kung Fu training to keep fit. I find that it really works wonders and builds really well defined muscles as well as building up your endurance. Anyways, here is my routine:

200 military push-ups(the ones you do with your elbows by your rib cage)
10 min single leg horse stance
holding yourself for 10 minutes in a stomach crunch position.
Running through the Hung Gar fist series 3 times each.

Its about a one hour routine and it really works wonders for me. The thing is, I have a really high metabolism, so no matter how much I eat and don't exercise, I will never gain weight. At 6'2 and 150 lbs, for over 7 years, I have remained that way.

Anyways, building muscle is the only way I can gain weight, and with this routine, I have gained 10 pounds, presumably all muscle, not including all of my original body fat converted to muscle.

One thing that I find is that building the arms is very time consuming. Military push-ups work, but its taking too long to do 200 of them a day, at sets of 30 and I don't have access to any gym equipment. Does anyone have any suggestions as to exercises that are more effective than pushups that doesn't require any equipment?

Cool another kung fu artist.

You know what really works for me is using barbell weights and going through the different katas holding them in your hands, going through the motions very slowly (this is important because if you do it fast you might throw out a shoulder or tear a ligament or something like that).

But you really should be weightlifting in a gym in addition to your kung fu training, or at the very least get a bunch of weights and a bench to lift with at home.

like I say to all the p*ssies who walk in here wondering why they cant gain mass by doing situp static holds and countless numbers of pushups, GET TO THE GYM, DEVELOP A FREEWEIGHT ROUTINE, AND START WORKING OUT LIKE A MAN.

No, but it does save more time. I don't usually go to the gym unless I go with a bunch of friends, which is usually about 2 to 3 times a week. For all the other times, I workout at home. Working out at the gym is a lot less time consuming because you can adjust the difficulty for each exercise. What I am interested in is what other exercises I can do to strengthen my arms and chest outside of using gym equipment. At home, I can build my abs and legs easily, its just that I haven't found some really good arm and chest exercises to do at home outside of military pushups.

I have tried holding myself in a mid pushup position for about 10 minutes, but its getting too time consuming because I hold myself in 3 different position, taking half an hour in the process. I am looking for more intense exercises that require less time. If only I had a chin up bar at home. Blah, I guess I will go make one.

ChunLi, don't listen to what they say, you don't need a gym to be fit like Bruce Lee was! By the way, I practice Kung Fu also. Orthodox Wing Chun to be exact.

I can just add a couple of things to your routine. If you really don't want to buy a bench or go to the gym, do the following. Instead of doing those 200 push-ups which are mostly useless, because as soon as you can do about 30 push-ups in a row, you can't gain any additional strength by doing more, only endurance.

The best way to make the resistance bigger, is to raise your legs. Start by putting your legs up on two phonebooks and doing 50 pushups. Gradually go until you're able to work-out with your legs on your bed, a chair, etc.

Also, what's a single leg horse stance? Is it this? Because I'm not sure what you mean by that. But if you can last 10 minutes just like in the picture, without falling down, you truly are great.

Also, Rahul's suggestion is good. What you can also do is different forms with a ball of hardened cement where there's 5 holes for your fingers. I don't know if you get what I mean, but it's to develop your grip, which is really useful in many many situations (grabbing, punching, squeezing, etc.).

You should also exercise the other muscles in your body like triceps, etc. You can only do that by going to the gym and isolating each and every moment. And try doing actual crunches instead of just staying statically like that, it should be more effective.

My fifty cents.

By single leg horse stance, I am doing the horse stance in the picture, except that I am standing one leg. So its sort of like raising one leg to kick, except that you hold it in that position and you bend the leg you standing on in a horse stance position. The reason why I do this is because it was getting too time consuming to do the horse stance in the picture you provided, I was standing in that position for 1 hour just to tire myself out. I switched to single leg horse stance to reduce the amount of time required to tire myself out from doing that type of stance.

Your suggestion on pushups sound good, I will try them tonight. Thanks in advance!

Uh...You know Bruce Lee gave up traditional Kung Fu right?

If you really wanted to practice Bruce Lee style martial arts you would be doing Jeet Kune Do.

Yes, I do know that. I don't see how you might have gotten the impression that I thought that Bruce Lee practiced Wing Chun Kung Fu throughout his whole life out of one little reference in my post.

Second of all, Jeet Kune Do is not martial arts, it's a philosophy, a way of being. There are no actual stances, the ones studying it have to develop a feel of their own body and express it through unique movements. Please inform yourself on **** before fronting it.

Jeet Kune Do is actually both.

Do you really think if you went to a Jeet Kune Do school they would tell you to do whatever motions you felt like? Of course not, they would learn at least the basic Jeet Kune Do fighting stance and motions developed by Bruce Lee.
