If a person only did Deadlifts and no other exercises say once or twice a week doing several sets and reps maybe for size and strength then eat right and rested etc., how would this program work would he grow whole body wise if he went up in deadlift weight each week?

You know just wondering not planning on this as the Deadlift works the whole body and in many circles the King of all exercises second to the Squat.

You'd most likely build up your back and nothing else. Ontop of that, probably injure yourself. While its good to do core exercises, you also need to keep your body in proportion. If you're going to just do core exercises, make sure you include the chest and legs also.

You would overtrain horrendously if you deadlifted heavily enough to grow more than once a week. Some people have to deadlift once every 10 days.

Personally I couldn't even imagine doing several sets of deadlifts and ONLY deadlifts. Yes its a great exercise but I can barely stand more less feel my legs the next couple of days

Damn bad advice. If you kept increasing weight lifted and calories ingested you would get huge all over.

Some people deadlift once every two weeks, or even once a month. I think thats for 1 rep maxes though.

i did only deadlifts for about 8-10 months,i alternated intensity and gone up to 15 sets a week.My front quads and hams, not to mention my ass got pretty huge,my lower back got shredded,my forearms and my back also got pretty swole. But i added weighted pull ups ,military presses and weighted pull ups and i get pretty big overall. I wound up injuring my lower back from doing DB presses, hoising them up on my knees and falling backwards then reversing that movement, hurt my back so i had to drop the routine all together.Overall ,my strength was through the roof! and as far as my development, the odd thing was i wasn't built like a regular bodybuilder type but more of a strongman type.Cannonbal shoulders ,wide back and huge forearms and though i did no direct chest workouts til later on,my chest was still pretty defined.I may or may not go back to this type of training...
If i had to do only two excersizes,it would be the deadlift and military press-maybe some curls.

Deadlifts
military press
weighted pull ups or chins
curls
push ups

Sounds like it was a good program until you injuried your back but not from the deadlifts but from DB presses.

Nothing wrong with cannonball shoulders or the strongman body those dudes are hugh and impressive.

Thanks for sharing your experience organizedconfusion.

no problem- i will most likely go back into this type of workout,i only worked out once a week but it was more then enough to get strong and big off of it.I worked out hard and was able to rest for soo long that the next workout came around, i was soo rested that i was strong as an ox! :cheer:
Not only that but i didn't have to eat a huge ammount of calories but i was still able to gain.It does suck that i hurt my back, i thought it was from deadlifting too often and too much but i realised it was the swinging motion with the DBs onto the bench then throwing myself back up that was hurting me! :(

Deadlifts really do get you amazingly strong,in contrast to how strong i was then and now..it's a noticable difference.

I usually deadlift 10 sets a week split between two days and maybe a few light/high rep sets just for fun. I don't use huge weight though. 315lbs is about as much as I do.

basic DL routine once a week

Deadlifts 10 x 6-8
Military press 6 x 5-6
Weighted pull ups 10x 3-4
curls 5 x 7-8
push ups 5 x Failure

If i had access to a gym -

-Monday-

*Supersets* 5x
Deadlifts 5-7 reps
Bench press 6-8
pull ups Failure

*Supersets* 5x
Squats 8-10 reps
Military press 6-8
curls 8-10

you don't really need alot to get strong and gain size..

Say I am improving my 5 rep deadlift by 5 lbs consistanly over several weeks. Would that be overtraining? Would I have to do them every 10 days?

If you're gaining consistently, you're not overtraining.
