Don't exactly have a gym membership or the supplements...

Here's what I have to work with:

barbell that goes up to 40 lbs.
dumbell that goes up to 40 lbs or 2 that go up to 30.
2 dumbells at 20 lbs.

is there any way i can do a viable routine with these weights?

Yes, but as you continue to lift you're going to need a heavier weight set.

Your best bet would be to try to join a gym if you cannot find cheap equiptment somewhere. I'm not sure how old you are, but most gyms have discounted prices for students if you're still in school

As far as supplements are concerned, if you're new at this, there's no need to invest in anything other than a multivitamin at the moment, and maybe some EFA's. Otherwise, just concentrate on proper nutrition and busting balls in the gym.

I would recommend you join a gym. They can teach you proper lifting technique and tell you abou nutrition and stuff like that.

The weights you have now will do in the beginning, but eventually you won't get stronger & bigger if you keep using your 40lbs weights because your body will get used to the resistance.

That's the key to getting stronger. You will have to continue giving your body a resistance it's not used to (overload).

I started out like you. Training at home with dumbbells. Getting little result, because I didn't really know what the hell I was doing. But now I train at the gym 3 times a week. I wish I had started in the gym in the first place. It would have saved me a lot of time.

Plus the gym is a great place to meet new people.

BTW, if you really want to train at home, use a weight that allows you to do 8 to 12 repetitions maximum if you want hypertrophy (muscle growth). If you do more you reps you will be training for muscle endurance. If you do less, like 4 or 6 reps you'll be training for power. Which will make you stronger, but you're muscle won't look as good.

On other thing that's very important. I don't know how many times a week you plan to exercise, but make at least every other day a rest day. You're body will need time to recover from a heavy training. If you train too much you'll actually get weaker instead of stronger.

Good luck man!

BTW. I'm doing my NSCA Personal Trainer exam in november so if anybody has any fitness related questions, ask me. It'll be a nice practice for me.

I would suggest getting a set of dumbells that use weight plates. I am using a set right now, and unless you get the point where you use all 10's on each (or a 85 lbs dumbell), you wont outgrow them.

Gyms do have more equipment then dumbell (obviously) but if you cant get to a gym like I can't, then use dumbell out of nessecity.

dumbells at home are giving me GREAT results ...

use them correctly and wisely ..

I plan to join the gym when I out grow my dumbells

(Plus I won't feel embarassed when I hit the gym by then....! before I bet 80% of chicks in the gym would be lifing more weights than me!!)
